Phoenix Start
UWGB offers a personalized admission option for those admission candidates who do not meet regular admission guidelines, but who demonstrate the motivation and skills necessary to succeed in college. A program of services is offered to selected students that includes academic skill development, career interest exploration, personalized advising and academic monitoring, study groups, and registration assistance. These services help students succeed personally and academically at the University.
Q - What is the process for being admitted to Phoenix Start?
A - The Admission's Review Committee completes a holistic review of all applications and supporting materials and, as part of the process, considers if Phoenix Start is a good fit for the student. These students are asked to reply to five questions and sign a student agreement.
Q - Do I need to complete an application to be considered for Phoenix Start?
A - There is no separate application for Phoenix Start. Admission to the Phoenix Start program is embedded within the UW-Green Bay application process.
Q - Does completing the questionnaire and signing the student agreement guarantee admission or obligate me to UWGB?
A - The questionnaire and agreement neither guarantees admission nor does it obligate students to UWGB. This is simply a chance for us to learn more about you and your willingness to commit to assistance.
Q - Is this a pre-college program?
A - No. Students who are admitted to UW-Green Bay through Phoenix Start are admitted students who are enrolled in the same classes as all other students and are expected to meet the same standards as all other students. Phoenix Start students are admitted on the condition that they follow the student agreement.
Q - What is the student agreement?
A - The items in the student agreement are things that all good students should be doing but Phoenix Start students are required to do. Details can be found below.
Q - How long are students in Phoenix Start?
A - Students remain a part of Phoenix Start until they have 30 degree credits and at least a 2.0 grade point average. This typically takes three semesters.
I will participate in the Phoenix Start Orientation.
Orientation occurs right before classes begin in fall. It is one half-day commitment.
I will attend all of my classes.
I will meet with my adviser as required, and I will not change my schedule without discussing it with my adviser first.
Students should expect to meet with their academic adviser once a month. The purpose of the advising sessions is to monitor the students' progress and to give the students an opportunity to ask questions and discuss their concerns. Advisers work with students to plan their schedules. Schedules will reflect the students' major, competency and general requirements, as well as personal interests. The goal is to have students make wise, balanced choices and to ensure they are making progress towards graduation.
I will participate in an approved career exploration and development option prior to earning 30 degree credits.
Students have a wide range of choices to meet this requirement. The purpose is to help students set appropriate goals for themselves and to meet the university deadlines for declaring a major.
I will successfully complete a weekly Phoenix Start learning exercise.
Examples of topics covered include: taking notes, studying for tests, taking tests, time management, etc.
I will use appropriate and available resources to help me be successful. Resources include but are not limited to: workshops, meeting with faculty, study groups, tutoring, Success Group, Disability Services, Study Table, and the Writing Center.
Students are required to meet with their instructors out of class time at least once each semester. Other resources will be required as appropriate and available. For example: If a student does not have a disability, he will not be expected to use Disability Services. If a student is not assigned any papers, then there is no need to go to the Writing Center. On the other hand, students are expected to attend study groups if available.
I will enroll in a designated general education course and participate in the accompanying study group.
This course will meet a requirement and is an opportunity for students to apply the skills introduced in the weekly learning exercises.
I will maintain a 2.0 or higher grade point average.
This is the minimum to maintain good standing at UW-Green Bay. Students must remain in good standing with the university to be in good standing with Phoenix Start
