For some years now one or more of the Research Assistants hired by the Cofrin Center for Biodiversity has been designated as a GIS Assistant. The arrangement is intended to support the use of GIS tools in biological coursework and research. Examples include:

  • Cartography assistance to Colleen Feucht, MSE, 2003 on her thesis, Is Lake Michigan's Door Peninsula a Significant Stopover Site for Migratory Birds? (Robert Howe, Advisor)
  • Mapping assistance to Megan Harvey, ES, 2008 on her undergraduate research project, Florivory in populations of Gentianopsis procera in Door County, Wisconsin. (Amy Wolf, Advisor)
  • Cartography assistance to Lawrence Eslinger, MSE, 2008 on his thesis, Population Dynamics of Muskellunge in Northern Wisconsin Lakes (Dave Dolan, Advisor)

It's An Interesting Job

Because the Biodiversity Center is a sought-after partner with a diverse constituency, some exceptionally interesting project opportunities come up and the GIS Assistants have numerous opportunities to work "outside-the-box". Using professional surveying equipment to set up a procedure for staking out a sample plot in Mahon Woods is one example that comes to mind. Working with the Friends of Toft Point to map the Toft family's favorite spots around their homestead is another.
