Bridge to Resch Trail

Bridge to Resch Trail

General Description

Green Isle Park woods. Green Isle Park is a 51 acre recreational area adjacent to the East River in the Town of Allouez. The park is a popular place for picnicking, sports, and hiking. Trails dissect several forest patches, and wetlands adjacent to the East River provide opportunities for finding aquatic insects and birds. Dense populations of the invasive European Buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica) and Glossy Buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula) can be seen along the forested portion of the trail in Green Isle Park. Birds eagerly eat the numerous cherry-like fruits and spread the seeds, and the open canopy and disturbed soils resulting from trail construction provide a highly favorable environment for establishment of the seedlings. Many invasive species are especially successful because they are adapted to the common habitats resulting from urban environments.

A bridge at the east end of the park (above) crosses the East River and connects with the Resch Family East River Trail, a 17.8 acre corridor that winds south for approximately 2 miles along the river to Lebrun Road and north beyond Allouez Avenue. The trail includes nearly 500 ft. of boardwalk through riparian wetlands. The invasive plant, Purple Loosestrife, is prominent along the trail, but efforts are underway to control its spread by introduction of leaf-eating and root-eating beetles.

Green Isle Park
Funding for the East River Trail was provided by a donation from Richard Resch, a local philanthropist and President of Krueger International.

Facilities

Facilities at Green Isle Park include a pavilion/shelter, playground, picnic areas, athletic fields, several rest room facilities, and hiking trails. Several lookouts with benches have been constructed along the East River.
