6. Brown County Reforestation Camp

reforestation camp.

General Description

In addition to N.E.W. Zoo, the Reforestation Camp encompasses 1600 acres of mixed forests containing northern hardwoods, oaks, and pine plantations. Trails are popular with cross country skiers in winter and hikers in summer.

This area is the best place in Brown County to find northern species like Common Raven, Winter Wren, Red Squirrel, and others. Secluded hiking trails traverse a variety of habitats and offer excellent opportunities to explore the ecology of northeastern Wisconsin.

The extensive areas surrounding the NEW Zoo include a variety of natural communities. Wet lowland communities dominated by American elm, aspen, and ash are scattered within upland forests of red oak, red and sugar maple, white pine, and paper birch. Sandy, well drained areas within the Reforestation Camp also support numerous red pine plantations.

Facilities

The scenic terrain offers 4 mi of snowmobile trails, 25 mi of cross country ski trails, 7 mi of horseback riding trails, and 14 mi of mountain bike trails. Nestled among the pines are several playground areas, grills, volleyball courts and a softball diamond. Two shelters complete with cooking facilities are available for rent. Additional facilities include a rifle range, trout fishing ponds and an observation tower.
