Of Special Interest

  • Summer Botanist entails collecting field data on vegetation on Phase 3 permanent forest inventory plots (WisCFI) in Wisconsin State Forests.  The successful candidate will work with fulltime foresters. Each team member will be responsible for the quality and timely collection of their portion of the data collected on each inventory plot. Deadline May 1, 2009.
  • Smithsonian Institution Internships An internship at the Smithsonian Institution is a prearranged, structured learning experience scheduled within a specific time frame. The experience must be relevant to the intern's academic and professional goals, and to research and museum activities of the Institution. Deadlines February 1, 2009 for 2009 summer session and October 1, 2009 for 2010 spring session.

Local and Regional

Baird Creek Preservation The Baird Creek Preservation Foundation Program seeks a paid seasonal intern (40 hrs per week for 12 weeks), starting June 2009, to assist foundation staff and board members in controlling invasive plant species in the Baird Creek Parkway. Deadline March 20, 2009.

Conservation on the Land Internship Program Numerous opportunities are available through the Conservation on the Land Internship Program.  Postings at this time include various types of Conservation Interns who will work at county Land Conservation Departments or related organizations throughout Wisconsin, including Crawford, Dodge, Lafayette, Rusk and Sheboygan Counties.

International Crane Foundation Intern Opportunities Multiple internships available in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Projects include a naturalist internship, sandhill crane and cropland project, veterinary student preceptorship in avian and conservation medicine, and aviculture internship.

Summer Field Reserach Assistants for an NSF-funded research project on habitat fragmentation of the tallgrass prairie in rural Minnesota. No experience is necessary, but you must be enthusiastic and hard-working. Housing is included and there is a stipend. There are opportunities for doing an independent project. Deadline March 6, 2009.

Wildlife in Need Center Wildlife Rehabilitation Intern Duties will include most aspects of wildlife rehabilitation including, but is not limited to: patient care and treatment, diet preparation, cage cleaning, assisting with exams, medical care, facility maintenance, rescue and release. Care is provided for wild Wisconsin birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. Length: May through August, with limited internship opportunities year-round.

 

National and International

Archibald Biological Station, Florida The goals of Archbold’s Internship Program are to train students to develop independent research skills and to foster positive professional interactions between Interns and (a) their supervisors, (b) resident staff and visiting scientists, and (c) other Interns. Visiting college classes and two seminar series each year provide additional opportunities for professional growth. Deadline varies.

Atlantic Salmon Federation The H. ROY CRABTREE INTERNSHIP IN SALMON CONSERVATION is awarded annually to an individual interested in obtaining experience in salmon conservation involving research and development, and usually requiring field work. Applicants for the award will have had some formal training, and/or experience, in areas related to conservation and will be expected to be interested in pursuing, or continuing in, a career where such expertise will be useful. Both students, and those already in the work force, are eligible to apply.

Bronx Zoo Teaching Fellowships The Education Department offers spring, summer, and fall fellowships to qualified college students, recent graduates or graduate students.Spring and fall fellows team teach in our onsite school programs for elementary aged children. Spring and fall fellows must be able to work 20 hours a week (mornings) for approximately 18 weeks. Summer fellows work in the Zoo's camp programs. Summer fellows must be able to work 35 hours a week for 11 weeks. Rolling deadlines.

The Cedar Creek Natural History Area of the University of Minnesota has opportunities for students to work as Research Interns. Most positions run from June through August, but some interns are needed as early as April and some until October. Pay is $10 per hour. If you are an undergraduate or a newly graduated student with a background in biology and want to start a career in ecology or environmental studies, or if you have a strong background and interest in flora of the Great Plains, we encourage you to apply.

Center for Fisheries Management, Florida The Fisheries Habitat Ecology Programs is conducting research that can be directly applied to marine conservation, and by doing so effectively contribute to conservation and management policy formulation. Among our primary research interests is examining the connection between nursery and adult habitats for fish species that undergo ontogenetic habitat shifts. Some of our current research addresses the connection between settlement and post-settlement abundance, nursery habitat use, and adult abundance for species that undergo ontogenetic habitat shifts. Chicago Botanic Garden's Internships The Garden's paid internships range in length from three months to one year, with varying start and end dates. See webpage for descriptions of the various internships including 20 internships in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Application deadline: Rolling deadlines most are mid March. Clinic for Rehabilitation of Wildlife C.R.O.W. A non-profit hospital providing care for injured and orphaned wildlife on the Gulf Coast of Southwest Florida, offers an externship for natural science students and others interested in wildlife rehabilitation. Externs are invited to observe and participate in patient admittances, diagnostics, surgeries and necropsies as available. Most wildlife patients spend the majority of their rehabilitation time in outside enclosures so the student can expect to endure or enjoy southwest Florida weather depending on the time of year. Ecological Society of America ESA lists a number of summer job and internship opportunities on their website, updated weekly. Deadlines vary.

EPA Internships The EPA Intern Program (EIP) at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a comprehensive, entry-level, professional, full-time employment and career development program. As a program participant, you will join an intensive two-year program to help you "jump-start" your career and develop your potential for future advancement within the Agency.

Field Museum Internships Vary by department and availability.

FSSU Marine Sciences Each student is given the opportunity to participate in general project activities at FSU, at the NMFS Laboratory, the Florida Marine Research Institute, the Mote Marine Laboratory, or the National Estuarine Research Reserve while performing a discrete task that forms some component of the mentor's ongoing studies. Each is expected to complete the project independently, perform data analyses, and write a paper in the form of a scientific manuscript.

The Institute for Bird Populations Several internships in various aspects of bird population research, including surveys, banding, vegetation assessment etc.. Most internships run from May 1 to August 8. But some are available in winter. Monthly stipends are provided to cover living expenses. The experience is usually fantastic. Milwaukee Public Museum Internships include Anthropology, Art History, Biology, Botany, Communications, Conservation, Education, English, Geology, History, Journalism, Marketing, Media Technology, Museum Studies, Photography, Public Relations, Studio Arts, Taxidermy, Theater, Zoology.

Mote Marine Laboratory Various opportunities to work on research projects including fisheries, toxicology, turtles, mammals, sharks. Deadlines vary.

National Council for the Environment Internships in policy and internet support.

National Zoo Internships The Research Internship Program of the National Zoo's Conservation and Research Center (CRC) offers internships in each of its major program areas: Conservation Biology , Reproductive Sciences, Science Education and Training.

Nature Conservancy Opportunities vary by region, use the site search engine. Deadlines January and February.

National Wildlife Federation The National Wildlife Federation's Internship program brings students and recent graduates to NWF offices around the country, where they can experience different aspects of environmental work - including conservation, education, outreach, fundraising and law.

NOAA Fisheries Internships Each summer, the Fisheries Behavioral Ecology Program offers several internships to highly qualified and motivated undergraduates. Students must be U.S. citizens and currently matriculated in a 4-year undergraduate program or have just graduated.

Santa Monica Mts. Natural Area, CA Use your background in botany, biology, environmental science, or ecology to practice existing skills and learn new ones doing concentrated field work with plants (Botany Intern, Fire Ecology Intern, Landscape Architecture Intern, Native Plant Nursery Intern, Restoration Ecology Intern) or with insects and animals [Entomology Intern, Wildlife Biology Internship (Wildlife Surveys)] to interpret the meaning of our natural resources to students and the general public (Park Ranger Intern, Interpreting Natural/Cultural Resources, Education Intern).

Student Conservation Association The nation's largest and oldest provider of conservation service opportunities, outdoor education and career training for students.  SCA's Conservation Internships offer four types of expenses-paid opportunities: short-term internships which are generally 12-16 weeks in length (RA, or Resource Assistant), long-term internships which are generally 6-12 months in length (CA, or Conservations Associate), 5-10 month residential positions in the Northeast and 10-16 week diversity internship opportunities geared at increasing ethnic and gender diversity in conservation careers. SCA interns often work alongside paid professional staff members and are expected to work 40 hours per week.  They receive funds to cover travel to the program site and return home; free housing; a subsistence/living allowance to help offset food expenses; and when eligible, AmeriCorp Education Awards of $1,180 to $4,725.  SCA internships are available nationwide and year-round in a variety of fields including: backcountry and wilderness management, cave management, environmental education, forestry, hydrology and water resources, photography, range management and plant taxonomy, and fisheries and wildlife. There are no final deadlines and and internship placement is continuous throughout the year.  A catalog of available internships is located in the Biodiversity Center (MAC 212) or search SCA's database for the most up-to-date internships.

Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Enables students to work on specific projects under the direction of SERC's professional staff and is tailored to provide the maximum educational benefit to each participant. Projects include terrestrial, atmospheric, and estuarine environmental research within the disciplines of ecology, biology, chemistry, microbiology, botany, zoology, mathematics, and physics.

Tall Timbers Vertebrate Ecology, Florida Interns will be performing (but not limited to) mist-netting birds, nest searches, monitoring color-banded individuals, assistance with banding red-cockaded woodpeckers, vegetation sampling, GPS/GIS mapping, and assistance with prescribed burning.

WCS International Conservation Programs Internships WCS’s International Conservation Program has five regional programs (Africa, Asia, Latin America, Marine, and North America) as well as a series of thematic programs (such as Living Landscapes, Science Resource Center, Global Carnivore, Wildlife Hunting and Trade, and Landscape Ecology and Geographic Analysis). Half-time and full-time internships in the Central office located at the Bronx Zoo are available to outstanding third or fourth year undergraduate or graduate students.  The content of each internship will vary depending on the projects under way within the program of interest.
