The Paul and Thea Sager Scholarship for Scientific Writing
In Memory of Edward W. Weidner
The Sager Scholarship recognizes a UW-Green Bay undergraduate who has demonstrated excellence in scientific writing resulting from a classroom or extracurricular academic activity. The recipient will receive a $1000 award, available for 2013.
This competitive scholarship was created by emeriti faculty Dr. Paul Sager and Dr. Dorothea Sager in memory of Chancellor Emeritus Edward Weidner and his commitment to UW-Green Bay and the Cofrin Arboretum.
Requirements
Eligible students must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average and must be enrolled as a student during Spring Semester 2013.
A broad range of activities at UW-Green Bay can provide the basis for science writing. Examples of acceptable submissions for the Sager Scholarship include a scientific manuscript based on independent student research; an in-depth lab report from a classroom assignment; an online blog describing an academic travel course, student project, or field trip; a review of current scientific literature about a topic of interest; or a grant proposal for future research. Guidance by one or more faculty members is expected, but applicants must show evidence of originality, initiative, and primary authorship of the composition.
Selection of the Sager Scholarship will be made by a committee consisting of the Director of the Cofrin Center for Biodiversity, 2 faculty members from the Department of Natural and Applied Sciences and 2 faculty members from the Department of Human Biology. The major selection criteria will be the quality and originality of the writing, scientific validity of the content and appropriate acknowledgment of information sources.
To Apply
Applications for the scholarship must include 1) the scientific composition or research paper and 2) a brief cover letter describing the context of the project, including acknowledgment of contributions by others. The composition may be of any length or form. A letter from a faculty mentor may be included with the application but is not mandatory.
