Anti-Virus Recommendations for Home Use

PC USERS
UW-Green Bay recommends that home PC users use Microsoft Security Essentials to guard against viruses, spyware, and other malware.

Microsoft Security Essentials is free for home and small business PCs and was designed to be simple to install and easy to use. It runs quietly and efficiently in the background so you don't have to worry about interruptions or making updates.

If a person is currently running a different anti-virus/anti-malware product, they should uninstall it prior to installing Microsoft Security Essentials.

MACINTOSH USERS
It is recommended that Macintosh users install Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition.

NOTE: Previous to December 29, 2011, UW-Green Bay offered McAfee anti-virus/anti-malware software under a “home use rights” agreement in conjunction with our campus licensing for McAfee products.   That contract has been terminated and will not be renewed.  Persons may continue to run their currently installed version of McAfee on their home computer for as long as McAfee provides updates for their currently installed version.   However, we recommend that persons switch over to other products to ensure they obtain the latest in updates to help keep their computer protected.
