Department Purchases - Personal Digital Assistants

Personal Smartphone’s and vertical devices (formerly known as Personal Digital Assistants “PDAs” or Personal Information Manager “PIM”) are becoming more and more popular in today's world of technology. A Smartphone is a mobile device containing a phone and software to manage your information. A vertical device has no phone, but may have WiFi capability and software as well.

Windows Mobile-based devices are among the many devices in use today. They are portable, hand-held devices that allow you to download and access your Outlook calendar, email Inbox, Task List, and Memo pad while on the road. You are able to synchronize your device via a wireless connection with the built in software known as “ActiveSync” or you can connect it to your PC via the USB port and use Windows ActiveSync 4.5. There are no state contract prices available for the Windows Mobile-based devices, so you can purchase them from a variety of sources.

Phone-based devices (such as the Smartphone) are able to sync through the cellular network to keep the device constantly updated with the University email system.  Any phone-based device should support ActiveSync for proper integration with our systems.  Departments looking to purchase these devices should be aware that state contracts and requirements are in place for cellular phones with data services.  Contact Purchasing for the latest information regarding state rules on these devices.  Individuals are free to purchase any device they wish. Smartphone configuration.

The Windows Mobile-based devices integrate easily with the campus e-mail system (Outlook Calendar, Inbox, Task List, and Memo pad.) In addition, hundreds of freeware, shareware, and commercial software applications are available to add functionality to the Windows Mobile-based devices. For a complete list of the newest Windows Mobile based devices, visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/default.mspx. ActiveSync devices are also available from Apple (iPhone), Helio by Verizon, Nokia, Palm, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson.

Please keep in mind that only the Windows Mobile-based devices are supported by CIT at UW-Green Bay. The IT Help Desk provides basic support for the Windows Mobile-based device in that we will assist you in interfacing with the campus Outlook application.  There are no hardware repair services provided by CIT for any of these devices.
