Federal Work Study is a federally funded, need based program, which gives students an opportunity for part-time
employment, on or off campus. Federal Work Study allows students to earn money to supplement their education, while
gaining meaningful work experience. Students must complete the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to find
out if they qualify.
Students will be notified of an award, and can view this on the Student Information System (SIS). Federal Work Study is awarded for the entire year and will be split equally between Fall and Spring semesters. Students may earn the entire dollar amount of their award, but not more than the award. (Exceptions must be discussed with the supervisor.) Earnings must not exceed the "per semester" amount.
Federal Work Study recipients are not assigned jobs. Students must apply to and be hired for jobs. Assistance with obtaining such employment can be found by using PRO.
Work Study Awards are not applied to tuition or related costs. Money earned from a Work Study position is paid to students
bi-weekly by direct deposit or paycheck.
Calculating Hours Students can determine the number of hours they may work by using the following formula:
Work Study Award/Hourly wage = Total number of hours
Total hours/Number of Earning Weeks = Number of hours per week
If a student has a job with a non-profit organization previous to being awarded Work Study, please contact the
Student Employment Coordinator (studentemployment@uwgb.edu). In most cases you may use your Work Study award for a job
you currently hold.
Monitoring Award Amounts
Federal Work Study (FWS) Verification Forms are emailed on a bi-weekly basis to students who have accepted a FWS award. Students are asked to monitor FWS awards using this tool. Please print or forward this email to your supervisor, as it is the only method they have to obtain information regarding your award.
FWS Verification Forms can be used as a tool during the interview process. Students are encouraged to bring these along with them to interviews or email along with their application.
Types of Work Study Jobs
Work-Study Jobs off campus are classified as Community Service OR America Reads/Counts.
Community
Service refers to jobs that work directly with disadvantaged community members to include youth, families or the
elderly. These jobs promote valuable hands-on experience, while benefiting the community.
Some examples of Off Campus Community Service Employers are:
- NEW Curative Rehabilitation Center
- Boy's and Girls Club
- YMCA/YWCA
- Marion House
- NEW Community Shelter
- Salvation Army
- Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary
America Reads/America Counts utilizes Work-Study students as reading and/or math tutors for elementary grades. This
is a great opportunity for education majors, as well as others. The agencies involved in this program are delighted
to have UW-Green Bay students working with them. These opportunities are posted in PRO under "Off Campus
Work Study". Students can also contact the Student Employment Coordinator for the names of organizations participating in
this program.
WORK STUDY CANCELLATION
When a student has been offered a Fall/Spring Federal Work-Study Award, and has not obtained a job 30 days after
the Fall semester has begun, that award will be cancelled. You must contact the Student Employment Office if you have employment with a later start date, or if you have a job that will not start until Spring semester.
Standards of Academic Progress must be met to continue eligibility for Work Study.
