DESCRIPTION : This Foundation Training presents the reason and legislative intent of the Indian Child Welfare Act, as well as the process for workers to follow in complying with ICWA in Wisconsin. Participants will learn to facilitate the implementation of ICWA. They will learn to identify and access resources needed to implement the law.

Participants will learn about Indian cultures and how to work effectively with American Indian families. They will learn to work collaboratively with tribal partners and offer culturally specific services to American Indian families.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • To understand the justification and legislative intent of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA)

  • To understand how to facilitate implementation of ICWA in cases involving Indian children

  • To understand how to identify and access resources necessary to assist in the implementation of ICWA

  • To understand how to work with American Indian families in a culturally competent manner

  • To understand how to engage tribal partners in order to build trusting relationships

  • To understand how to work collaboratively with tribal partners to offer culturally specific services to American Indian families

TARGET AUDIENCE: Foundation training is intended for new staff with under two years of experience or for child welfare professionals who, with their supervisors, have determined that this Foundation course meets their training needs.
