Art 490 -- Contemporary Art -- Professor Carol Emmons
This guide is intended to assist you in determining if there is enough information available
on a given artist to meet the research paper requirement of a "minimum of ten scholarly sources." There is also information on how to limit in Art Full Text to review articles to
support the Review Analysis Project. You will have an opportunity to learn more about the resources below and to do some additional searching during the library instruction session on Sept. 14th.
If you are struggling or have questions at any time either before or after the library session
on the 14th of September, don't hesitate to contact us. For additional information connect
to our Research Assistance Page .
Of course please stop by the reference desk on the third floor (reference desk hours) if you
are working in the library and have questions.

Library Catalogs
Cofrin Library Catalog
The Cofrin Library Catalog may have information on your artist, assuming
they are prominent. It may also be useful for getting books on the style
of art your subject practices. Don't worry if you don't find a book on your artist in the Cofrin collection. There still might be plenty of material accessible through the resources listed below.
As a memeber of the UW Green Bay community, you are able to check out books from any University of Wisconsin campus. Universal Borrowing allows you to request items directly from any UW System library through the Cofrin Library Catalog. Items will be available for pick up at the Cofrin Library in approximately one to five days. Periodicals, reference books, and special or archival collection materials are not available through this service.
WORLDCAT
You will also want to
search in WorldCat,
a library catalog that
searches 15,000 libraries worldwide. Items found here can
in most cases be loaned from the owning library. Once you find an item that
you would like to loan, click on the "FIND IT" button
to arrive at ILLIAD, the library's interlibrary loan service. Items
typically arrive
in a week or so. If an item is very rare and only held
by a couple of libraries your request
may be denied. Also,
many libraries do not allow films to circulate, but others do, so don't
hesitate to put in a request.
Online Databases -- When accessing from off campus you will be asked to enter your username and password (the same information you use to log on to the campus network).
Art Full Text
A key database that
will be useful both for the review exercise and the research paper.
For the review article search for your artist as a subject and limit to exhibit to find reviews of the artists work.
For the research paper search for the artist as a subject and limit to feature article and peer review. This will bring back articles that fit the criteria for your ten sources.
Academic Search PremierAlthough art is not the primary focus you may be able to find information about your artist in publications that are not included in Art Full Text. For example, I found a five page full text article in Academic Search Premierreviewing the work of Matthew Barney from the New Republic, a general news magazine that is not indexed in Art Full Text.
ProQuest Newspapers
Access to full text articles
in the New York Times,
Washington Post, and hundreds of other newspapers worldwide (articles do not count towards your ten scholary sources!). A seach for
Matthew Barney and interview returned a detailed interview with
the artist from The Independent, a London newspaper. You can also set an Arts/exhibits limit in document type. This will return more substantial articles.
Print Journals
The journals are located on the 4th floor of the library and are shelved alphabetically by
the first letter of the title. So, if you wanted to flip through issues of Artforum International you could go up to the 4th floor to the "A" section.

Do you want to know which journals the library gets in electronic format? Use the Electronic Journal List to find out.
Electronic Journal List
Reference Resources (can not be used in your list of 10 sources, but may provide
a bibliography of sources you can track down to use. Will also provide good basic information).
The library has a few reference resources on the third floor, that may be of use. For
example, if you were focusing on Harmony Hammond (American sculptor, painter, and
mixed-media artist) for the Research Paper you would find an entry for her in Contemporary Women Artists (N 8354 C66 1999) giving some biographical information, exhibition dates, publications, books that she is mentioned in. Stop at the reference desk on the third floor if you have questions.
