If you have any questions about Library resources for this, or any other class don't hesitate to connect to our Reseach Assistance page to find out how to contact a reference librarian.

Primary Sources

Aside from the resources below the Library does not have access to primary resources such as diaries and letters concerning fatherhood for the time period you are studying. However, the resources below in the books section may contain some primary material. When searching in the Historical New York Times you can limit by date.

  • Historical Newspapers - The New York Times
Description: Historical Newspapers-The New York Times has full text and full image articles from the New York Times dating back to the 19th century.
Coverage: 1851-2001; more recent articles can be found in Proquest Newspapers.

    Lexis Nexis Academic
Select "Legal Resources" from the left menu. You can search for legal cases by keyword. These would be considered primary sources. However,I recommend starting with Law Review articles. A search for fatherhood over the past two years brings up many articles that cite dozens of cases. Make sure to select the relevance link to bring the most useful articles to the top of your list.

Finding Journal Articles

FIND IT!

When searching in databases you will quickly find out that not everything is in full text (unless you are in one of the few exclusively full text databases like JSTOR or Project Muse). If you find just a citation (no electronic full text) click on the title of the article, and then the FIND IT button to determine if the article is in full text in another database, in our print journal collection on the fourth floor, or available for one dollar through interLibrary loan. If you have questions don't hesitate to contact the reference desk.

  • America: History and Life
Description : Indexes publications devoted to the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present.
    Coverage: 1964 -
  • JSTOR
Description: JSTOR is unique because the contains complete backfiles of core scholarly journals in PDF full text format. Many journals reach back to the 1800s.
Coverage: varies from title to title, but approximately from the 1800s to 2000.
  • Project Muse
Description: Project Muse provides the full text of scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences, and mathematics.
    Coverage: 1995 -
  • Humanities Full Text
Description: Provides indexing and abstracting of English- language periodicals on disciplines including literature and language.
Coverage: varies from title to title, but approximately 1990 to the present.

  • Communication and Mass Media Complete (CMMC)
Description : CMMC incorporates CommSearch (formerly produced by the National Communication Association) and Mass Media Articles Index (formerly produced by Penn State) along with numerous other journals to create a research and reference resource of unprecedented scope and depth in the communication and mass media fields.

You may also want to try some general resources that cover a lot of topics but none in great detail. Here you will pick up publications across the disciplines that may be of use but not indexed in the resources above. To search general resources connect to http://www.uwgb.edu/Library/databases/general.html.

Connect to the Library's database by subject page to access databases in a variety of disciplines. For example, you may find additional secondary material in Sociological Abstracts, a database listed on the Sociology page or in PsycInfo, a database listed on the Psychology page.

Finding Specific Journals and Journal Articles

If you have a name of a journal or a citation to an article and you want to see if it is in one of the Library databases (or in print, or if you need to interLibrary loan it) you can connect to the Find Your Citation! Service. For example, selecting "Journal" and entering Journal of Popular Culture you will discover that the publication is in full text in two databases from about the early 1990's and we have access to it from the publisher's website from 1967. You will get direct links to these resources.

Books in the Cofrin Library and Beyond

Below are two books in the Library collection that may be of some use. Note that both of them are in the HQ 756 call number range. Make sure to examine the shelves above, below, to the right, and to the left of this area to find additional materials on this topic. You may also want to try a keyword search for parenting and history.

You also have the option of searching other libraries and having materials in book form sent here for free. I recommend searching WORLDCAT if you would like to take advantage of this service. A recommended search there would be fatherhood and history to bring up over 200 items. You may also want to search for parenthood and history to generate additional results.

Some of the books you find may contain primary materials such as excerpts from letters of diaries.
