Competition
This year's AISES challenge is to launch a dual-deployment high-powered rocket to an altitude of no less than 2,000 feet and no more than 3,000 feet above ground level (AGL) using a CTI motor no larger than a "K". The rocket must be no less than five (5) inches in diameter and carry an on-board legged-lander. The lander must be deployed and land under its own parachute. Upon an upright, lander touchdown both an audible and flashing light alarm must activate while, at the same time decoupling the parachute from the lander using a non-pyrotechnic device (fire prevention) to prevent it from being tipped or dragged. Winner of the flight portion of the competition will be the team who successfully lands their legged-lander closest to the launch pad. Teams must use back up motor ejection at apogee. Teams must have a safe flight mission; the rocket and legged-lander must be retrieved in flyable condition with little or no damage.

Equipment (provided based on availability of funds):
  • RockSim (CAD software)
  • Rocket motor and motor casing will be provided per competition flight parameters on day of launch.
  • Adept ALTS25 altimeter: provided to teams after filing of approved preliminary design report (PDR)
  • 4-inch Giant Leap altimeter payload bay
  • Up to $175 in rocket supplies


Aesthetic Award:
An award will be given to the team whose rocket has the most innovative and professional appearance. Details that will be looked at include: paint, design, visibility, construction details, & overall “Wow” factor. This award will be voted on by the judges at the time of oral presentations. The winning team will be presented with the "Aesthetic" award at the banquet on Saturday night.

Team Spirit Award: This award will be given by a vote of all competing Tribal College teams to the team that shows interactive spirit, helpfulness, and cooperation. Teams will be encouraged to look at not only how the the other teams interact with each other but also how they interact with other team members, judges and staff. The winning team will be presented with the "Great Spirit" award at the banquet on Saturday night.


The Rocket Competition will be judged by these separate parts:

1.  Design Analysis (30% of total score)

a. Preliminary Design Report (PDR)

b. Critical Design Report (CDR)

c. Flight Readiness Report (FRR)

2.  Oral Presentation (15%)
