Sight Reading Tips

Before you begin sight singing, take a moment to look for these key points to help you sing with greater accuracy:

Look for road hazards. Glance through the piece searching for repeat signs, 1st and 2nd endings, a coda, or other special instructions.

Notice key and time signatures.

Look for dynamic markings.

Look for melodic challenges. Locate accidentals, key changes, or unusual patterns in the melody.

Look for similarities. Search for sections that will sound similar or use similar melodic patterns. This will help you sing more accurately the second time the material appears.

Look for changes in rhythm or articulation.

Keep up. Always read ahead in the music. Know what is coming next.

Sing. Don't sit there and listen to your neighbor. Don't give up or get frustrated; you'll never learn if you don't try!
