What is a Phoenix Scholar Award?

Affording college is important to you. And to us. The Phoenix Scholar Award is intended to honor strong academic performance and provide a discounted tuition rate to students who meet the academic and residency criteria described below.

What do I need to do?

There is no separate application for Phoenix Scholar Awards. Phoenix Scholar Awards are automatically applied to qualified students. Awards will be based on students’ GPA or ACT score at the time of admission, and students will receive the highest award for which they are eligible. These awards are not the "scholarships" nor are they "financial aid". It is a remission in relation to the non-resident portion of tuition. Eligibility in this program requires:

In-person Enrollment

Phoenix Scholar Awards will only be applied to courses offered in person. Award amounts will be prorated based on students' schedules.

Non-Resident Status

Status as a non-resident or Midwest Student Exchange student for tuition purposes.

Degree seeking

You can receive this award up to the earning of your first bachelor’s degree, or attempting a maximum of 150 credits (including test and transfer), whichever occurs first.

UW-Green Bay has set criteria for the levels of Phoenix Scholar Awards available to students based on their past academic performance, specifically test scores or grade point average (seen in the table below). Use the information in the chart to determine your eligibility. Please note that the percentage listed is a remission in relation to the non-resident portion of tuition. A 100% remission would mean that a student’s non-resident tuition is reduced to the in-state tuition rate.

Additional eligibility requirements and details
 1. Phoenix Scholar Awards will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters.
 2. The amount listed in a student's award letter is based on full time enrollment (12+ credits) while taking ‘in person’ classes. A mixture of ‘in person’ and ‘online’ courses will also proportionally reduce the amount of the award, since online courses are charged at the WI resident tuition rate. (e.g. 6 in person and 6 online courses = 50% of award).
 3. Awards will be in effect until you complete your undergraduate degree or you attempt a total of 150 credits.
 4. The awardee must remain a non-resident student for tuition purposes in order to receive this award.
 5. The awardee must remain enrolled each fall and spring semester or the award will be discontinued. If you reapply to the university, you will be assessed for available Phoenix Scholar Awards at that time.
 6. In order to remain compliant with NCAA rules and regulations regarding equivalencies, the acceptance of an award, under this program, by any student-athlete is subject to Athletic Department approval.
