The
Wisconsin Legislature authorized four Extended Degree Programs for the University
of Wisconsin System in 1978. The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay program
has been active since that date.
In 1998-99, with the assistance of a UW System grant, the Extended Degree Program staff and faculty developed nine courses for asynchronous delivery via the Internet. The program currently has fifteen courses available for Internet delivery.
In 1999-2000 a curriculum revision and change of the name of the major to Interdisciplinary Studies (IST) was approved. IST majors complete lower-level courses related to General Education requirements. Some upper-level courses in the major are similar to a traditional liberal arts degree -- humanities, natural sciences, and the social sciences. Additional skills of problem-solving, communication, statistics, and research, as well as a knowledge of business and economic concepts, are also part of this major. The IST major also includes an "area of emphasis" in which a subject of interest is studied in depth.
In May of 2001, it became possible for IST students to obtain minors in the following subject areas by taking courses through the Extended Degree Program: Accounting, Business Administration, English, Human Development, Psychology, Sociology, and Women's Studies.
In 2002, the Extended Degree Program began offering an 18-credit Certificate Program in e-Communication in conjunction with the IST degree. The courses in the certificate program prepare students to work in an electronic environment. The certificate is awarded at the time the degree is completed.
