PREASSIGNMENT: In preparation for our first class together on February 9, 2008, please read:
Module 1 – Our New Workplace
Module 2 – The Management Process
Module 3 – Management Learning
Module 4 – Ethics and Ethical Behavior
Module 9 – Managers as Decision Makers
The chapters are not lengthy. When we meet we will focus on the application of the material in these modules. Throughout the modules you will find self-assessment activities. Take a few moments and complete them, making note of the results. Please bring the list of your results to class in February. One of the things you will do throughout the course is to build a profile of yourself as it relates to your management/leadership style.
Following the class, there will be some discussion questions you will need to complete and submit to D2L. Watch in early January for your D2L course. In early January I will be posting the syllabus and assignments to D2L. The course will be open and available by January 10.
I’m looking forward to meeting with you and having some fun learning about management!

PREASSIGNMENT: The purpose of this pre-assignment is to
--familiarize you with the skills of summarizing, paraphrasing and quoting, skills you will need for all the papers in this class (Chapter 1);
--familiarize you with our text; and
-- introduce you to the issue of obedience to authority, the subject of your first paper. I will give you a detailed assignment for that paper at our first class. At this point I want you to read the articles in the book and think about this important issue.
Read: Lawrence Behrens and Leonard J. Rosen, Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum, 10th edition:
“A Note to the Student” (xxix-xxx)
Chapter 1, Summary, Paraphrase, and Quotation (3-49). We will have a worksheet on this in class February 2nd
Chapter 9, “Obedience to Authority” (349-420)
Write: There are two parts to this assignment. Write your responses in narrative form: use complete sentences (rather than lists) and paragraphs; check for grammar, punctuation, and spelling and proofread your paper. Use 12 pt Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, double-spaced.
Part 1. In the table of contents, read through Part II, “An Anthology of Readings” (xi-xx). Which issues do you find especially interesting? Write about a page telling me which issues interest you and why they interest you.
Part 2. Read Jean Anouilh’s “Antigone” (and the editors’ introduction) on pages 414-420. On page 421 are “Discussion and Writing Suggestions”: Write a response of about two pages to any ONE of these suggestions (omit #8)
Please send your responses to parts and 1 and 2 (in the same document) to me in an email or as an attachment no later than January 30. Please email me with questions! gordond@uwgb.edu
Send me an email!
Sometime before January 30th, please send me an email in which you briefly introduce yourself to me: What is your major? What are your interests? What do like to read—Sports Illustrated? Harry Potter books? People magazine? books on the Civil War? What writing classes have you taken in the last five years? What concerns do you have about this course?
Please send to gordond@uwgb. Looking forward to hearing from you!

1. Prior to our first class on Jan. 26 please watch (or rewatch if you've already seen it) the 1997 movie Contact starring Jodie Foster. Watch carefully for symbolism and take notes examining the symbolism of the primary characters (Ellie, Palmer, Kent, Drumlin and Hadden) and objects such as the telescope, compass and "machine". What do each of these characters and objects represent? The movie addresses the issue of faith but not in a purely religious context. What are the differences between the faith shown by Palmer and that of Ellie? Please bring your notes with you to class and we will discuss these topics as a group.
2. Please read the first chapter of Polkinghorne Science and Theology and generate a simple 1-2 page typed outline of the material. This type of short outline does not allow you to go into great detail but try to develop simple definitions for the new terminology. I will collect your outlines at the end of class after we discuss this material as a group.
