With careful estate planning, donors often discover they can make the “gift of a lifetime” – a charitable donation of a magnitude they might not have dreamed possible – within their current financial parameters. And while you want your gift to make a difference, sorting through the many opportunities for philanthropic support can seem almost overwhelming. The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is here to help work with you, your family, and your financial advisors to ensure your gift will have the greatest impact possible. Giving options include: Wills and Trusts Charitable gifts made through a will are 100 percent tax deductible. After providing for loved ones, you may choose to make a gift to UW-Green Bay. Additionally, you may designate the University as beneficiary in the event your heirs do not survive you. Your attorney can revise your will or make a simple amendment using the following language found at the bottom of this page. Charitable Remainder Trusts Assets (typically securities) are transferred to a trustee, with income paid annually to one or more individuals for a set period of time, or for life. At the end of this irrevocable arrangement, the assets are a gift to the University. Charitable Lead Trusts This is a flexible plan in which assets are transferred to a trust that pays income to one or more charitable recipients. As a fixed date or at the time of death, the assets are transferred to others you name. Pooled Income Funds Sometimes called “charitable mutual funds”, these are trusts made up of contributions from many donors. Beneficiaries are designated for your share of the annual earnings. The principal later becomes property of the University to be used according to your wishes. Gifts from Retirement Plans IRA’s, Keough Plans and pension plans are examples of assets that can be big tax targets, making them favorable candidates for charitable contributions. One option is to add the University as a second beneficiary, after your spouse. Life Insurance Insurance needs can change, as successful children no longer need the protection, or as a family business grows prosperous and secure. You can amend your existing policy to add the University as an additional or contingent beneficiary. Gift Annuities Unique among the deferred gifts is the gift annuity. Part gift and part purchase, it earns a charitable deduction for the donor and creates a life income stream for the designated beneficiary, typically the donor and/or spouse. This can be set up as a deferred annuity – until after retirement, for example. How to include UW-Green Bay in your will Cash, securities, real estate or personal property can be conveyed to UW-Green Bay through a simple and inexpensive amendment to your will. Sample language is as follows: SPECIFIC AMOUNT, UNRESTRICTED PURPOSE “I hereby give, devise and bequeath to the University of Wisconsin Foundation, for the benefit of UW-Green bay, the sum of $_________ as an unrestricted gift to be used in the area of greatest need at the time the gift is received. SPECIFIC AMOUNT, SPECIFIC PURPOSE I hereby give, devise and bequest to the University of Wisconsin Foundation, for the benefit of UW-Green Bay, the sum of $________ to be used for ______________. It is understood and agreed that should the purpose for which this bequest is instituted cease to exist, then the University may devote said bequest for such other uses and purposes as it determines to be in accordance with my original intent in making this gift. PERCENTAGE OF ESTATE, UNRESTRICTED PURPOSE I herby give, devise and bequeath to the University of Wisconsin Foundation, for the benefit of UW-Green Bay, ________ percent of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate as an unrestricted gift to be used in the area of greatest need at the time the gift is received.
