Questions students may ask

How do I officially declare my major/minor?

Using the "Official Declaration of Major/Minor" form, discuss and fill out the form with the student. The form MUST include the emphasis (for those programs with emphases), catalog year, and faculty advisor assignment. The student submits the form to the Registrar’s Office.

ADVISING POINT: After the form is submitted to the Registrar’s Office, the student’s SIS account will include the official requirements for the major/minor in the SIS Advisement Report. This becomes the student’s degree audit and eligibility for graduation will be evaluated against this report. Advise students to regularly review their SIS Advisement Report.

ADVISING POINT: If your program is a disciplinary program, use this opportunity to discuss interdisciplinarity and the options for declaring an interdisciplinary major/minor.

What is the residency requirement for my major/minor?

Residency requirements refer to the credits that must be completed at UWGB in order to earn a degree from UWGB. There is an overall degree residency requirement as well as residency requirements for the major/minor. Exceptions to this requirement are the prerogative of the Academic Dean.
  • Overall degree residency requirement: 30 credits must be earned at UWGB.

  • Residence in the major: 15 credits must be earned at UWGB and one-half of the upper level requirements for any major must be earned at UWGB.

  • Residence in the minor: 9 credits must be earned at UWGB and one-half of the upper level requirements for any minor must be earned at UWGB.

Can a transfer course/alternate UWGB course substitute for a requirement in my major/minor?

The unit chair must approve substitutions and waivers using the Academic Plan Substitution/Waiver Form. Generally, lower level courses/electives may substitute for lower level requirements and upper level courses/electives may substitute for upper level requirements. Substitutions using a lower level course for an upper level requirement may violate the minimum upper level requirement for all majors/minors. Any time a substitution or waiver is made on an academic plan, ensure that the student will continue to meet the residency requirements for the UWGB degree (refer to question above), as well as the minimum upper level requirements for the major/minor.

Can I register for more than 18 credits?

Students who wish to enroll in more than 18 credits must seek approval from the advisor using a Petition. Since final approval rests solely with the faculty advisor, prior review of the student’s transcript is strongly encouraged.

ADVISING POINT: Students should carefully consider the academic workload associated with a credit overload. Questions to consider: Is the overload appropriate to the student’s abilities and academic history? Is the overload relevant or do other options for course completion exist?

ADVISING POINT: Students will incur an additional per credit fee for each credit over 18 credit limit. Refer student to the Billing Office, Student Services 1700, x 2224 for information regarding cost.

How do I sign up for an independent study/internship?

Students must fill out an Independent Study Proposal Form. It is the student’s responsibility to secure all required signatures and submit it to the Registrar’s Office. Upon receipt of the form, the Registrar’s Office will assign a course registration number to the independent study/internship and return a copy of the proposal form to the student. The proposal form does not serve as an add card, thus students are responsible for officially adding the course.

Am I ready to graduate?

Students want to know if they are "ready" to graduate and generally want someone to verify their plan to graduate by a specific term. Although the official responsibility for "clearing" students to graduate lies with the Registrar’s Office, the advisor can review the following list of graduation requirements with the student, using the Unofficial Transcript and Full Advising Report. Completed requirements will show as "unbolded" while unsatisfied requirements will show in "bold" print. Note: It is the student's responsibility to initiate the graduation process by applying for graduation from the student’s SIS account. Early application for graduation is strongly encouraged. For more information regarding graduation visit www.uwgb.edu/registrar/services/gradinfo/application.html.

Checklist of requirements:
  • 120 credits

  • General Education requirements

  • English and math competency requirements

  • Writing Emphasis

  • Major

  • Minor

What kind of job can I get with your major/minor?

Students are eager to know what kinds of employment opportunities await them upon graduation. Talk about your program and how it prepares students for the world of employment. Resources on this topic include MajorTopia and Career Services.

ADVISING POINT: Suggest internships and independent study opportunities. Encourage students to pursue extracurricular activities that support their academic goals.

Can I earn an Associate Degree from UWGB?

Yes, UWGB awards an Associate of Arts & Sciences degree. The form for declaring the Associate Degree is available from the Academic Advising Office or online at the Registrar's Office. Students must satisfy the following requirements for the AAS:
  • Minimum 60 credits

  • General Education, including a lab science course from the Natural Sciences
