Advising can be a rewarding experience. As a faculty advisor you have an opportunity to play a key role in a student’s academic life. Here are some hints for creating effective advising sessions:
Be accessible.
Post your hours in every appropriate location and keep it updated. Web site, course syllabus, office,
etc.
Be informed.
Part of an advisor’s role is about providing accurate and up-to-date information. Keep your advising
resources in easy reach at all times.
- Bookmark Web sites
- Keep a copy of the current UWGB catalog
- Keep advising forms in one place (hard copy and/or electronic)
- Keep key contacts (who to call) on your speed dial.
Get to know your advisees.
Although time (lack thereof) is frequently a challenge, take a minute to ask a student about
his/her classes, jobs, extracurricular activities, and interests. This opens the door to some
quick and helpful advising sessions.
Refer appropriately.
Find out what a student needs before you refer. Referrals that
occur too quickly often contribute to a "getting
shuffled from office to office" experience. Instead,
call the office first to ensure you are making the correct
referral and to increase likelihood of the student following
through on the referral. Use this helpful "Who
to Call/Refer To" list (PDF) for your routine referrals.
Use your Drop in Advisee tool in SIS.
It allows you to view the unofficial transcript and advising report
for your assigned advisees as well as any "drop in"
student.
