OVERVIEW OF COMMUNICATION & THE ARTS:
Communication and the Arts is concerned with the structure, roles, and social and aesthetic consequences of all forms of communication, particularly language, mass media, graphics, art, music, theatre, and creative writing. The program has several areas of emphasis which can be pursued as interdisciplinary majors or minors. These often are combined with disciplinary programs such as Art, Music, Theatre, and Communication Processes, among others.
Each Communication and the Arts major extensively studies an area of emphasis and consists of courses designed to thoroughly prepare the student in a specialization. (Click on links below to learn more about each emphasis!)

Environmental Design (click here for more information ) is offered cooperatively with Urban and Regional Studies and examines the forces that shape the settings in which humans live and act. Emphasis is on understanding and using the design process as a creative, decision-making tool. Students might combine this emphasis as a major with programs in Art, Psychology, Sociology, pre-architecture, or pre-engineering to prepare for graduate study or for careers in architecture, engineering, environmental design, urban planning, visual arts, interior design, or industrial design.

Communication Arts (click here for more information) brings together studies of image and text to examine both the theory and process of informative and expressive communication. Study of the history, applications, and influences of print and video communications, including the transition between traditional and computer methods of generating messages integrating image and text, support the development, design, and production of a whole range of communication materials.
THE COMMUNICATION & THE ARTS MINOR:
There are also areas of emphasis for the minor in Communication and the Arts. They include:
Graphic Communication focuses on integrating text and images into coherent communication. Combined with a major in Art, Communication Processes (Electronic Media, Photography, or Journalism), or Business Administration (Marketing), the emphasis prepares students for a broad array of careers including advertising, design, publishing, computer graphics, illustration, and photography. Graduate study in graphic design, visual communications, or art are other possibilities. The emphasis has an active internship program.
Arts Management aims to developing the conceptual and cultural understanding and professional skills required for support and management of the arts. Working within interdisciplinary related arts context, students focus on such areas as public awareness and audience-building, funding and financial management, and the role of the arts in the community. Practicum and internship experiences are available though a wide range of community arts organizations and agencies as well as on-campus visual and performing arts activities.
WHAT'S UNIQUE ABOUT THIS MAJOR AT UWGB :
Communication Arts facilities include an electronic publishing graphics computer laboratory, and photography darkroom, studio, and image processing computer laboratory where students work individually and in problem-focused groups. Environmental Design provides an intense small group approach to problem-solving along with access to computer-aided design and model-building facilities. Internships and practicums provide opportunities for work in the field among professionals.
SKILLS & ABILITIES GAINED WITH THIS MAJOR :
Students will acquire the knowledge to use computer-aided design and computer imaging in both Windows and Macintosh environments, knowledge of traditional photographic and print imaging and production methods, writing skills, and ability in generating solutions and strategic thinking.
WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THIS MAJOR :
Studies in Communication Arts provide a contemporary liberal arts education and support advanced studies and professional work in a wide range of communication and expressive careers, among them publications management, electronic publishing, journalistic and creative writing, corporate communications, advertising, marketing, public relations, copy writing, editing, advertising and editorial photography, design, art direction, and creative direction. Studies in Environmental Design, when combined with studies in related areas can prepare students for careers in architecture, urban planning, interior design or industrial design. Graduate studies associated with these fields of knowledge also are possibilities.
