EDUCATION
Interdisciplinary Major or Minor - www.uwgb.edu/education
OVERVIEW OF EDUCATION:
UW-Green Bay 's Teacher Education program has two goals: 1) to prepare teachers to address the needs of a changing school population; and 2) to prepare teachers to teach content and skills required by changes in society and the work place.
All students interested in pursuing a teaching career must apply and be accepted into UW-Green Bay’s Professional Program in Education. Admission to the Education Program is not automatic. Students must first meet minimum requirements to be considered for admission. Then a limited number of the best qualified students from all applicants are admitted each semester. Students can visit the Education Program website: http:wwww.uwgb.edu/education, call the Education Program Office at 465-2137 or stop by the Office in Wood Hall 416 to obtain admission information.
At UW-Green Bay, students interested in a career in elementary education will fulfill the requirements for an interdisciplinary major in Education along with additional requirements mandated by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Upon completion, graduates will receive a bachelor's degree in education.
Students who desire to teach at the middle and high school levels will fulfill the requirements for an interdisciplinary minor in Education, a subject-matter major along with additional requirements mandated by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction They will graduate with the bachelor's degree in their major subject area and an Education minor.

WHO SHOULD BE AN EDUCATION MAJOR :
-
WITHOUT A DOUBT. Obviously, you must enjoy being around children and adolescents. However, be very careful, a love of children does not guarantee that you’ll love teaching! This is a very demanding career, but also extremely rewarding. The best teachers are those that pursue a lifetime of learning which does not end at graduation. Teaching should be a calling, a commitment to educating, and not just a job.
-
KNOW THYSELF. Students interested in becoming a teacher must have the ability to communicate, inspire trust and confidence, and motivate students, as well as understand their educational and emotional needs. They also should be organized, dependable, patient, and creative.
-
MINOR DECISIONS. If you are interested in teaching in the elementary grades you must complete a minor in an approved discipline. Contact the Education Program Office for an approved list. English, mathematics, biology chemistry, history, and psychology are examples of possible minors students can complete.
WHO SHOULD BE AN EDUCATION MINOR :
Students interested in teaching at the middle or high school level are required to complete the Education minor. This minor s combined with a major course of study corresponding to the area you want to teach.
WHAT’S UNIQUE ABOUT THIS MAJOR AT UWGB:
-
TOOLS YOU NEED. The interdisciplinary problem-focused studies offered at UW-Green Bay provide an uncommonly strong preparation for teaching. Students focus on excellence in the teaching/learning process through methods and field experience courses which provide the background, knowledge, and instructional tools needed to become an effective teacher. These complement strong academic coursework in communications, the arts, humanities, social studies, science and mathematics.
-
INVOLVEMENT. Students have many opportunities to get involved in the schools through numerous course-based field experiences. These field experiences not only give students valuable experience, but they also give students a chance to learn more about themselves and what the teaching professional is actually like. The Student Wisconsin Education Association also provides future teachers with opportunities to become involved in their profession.
-
IT TAKES A VILLAGE. The UW-Green Bay Education Program views teaching not just as simply educating students, but creating a community partnership for education with parents, other teachers, students, and administrators.
-
BEYOND TOMORROW. Not only does the Education Program at UW-Green Bay prepare future teachers…but it also prepares teachers for the future.
SKILLS & ABILITIES GAINED WITH THIS MAJOR:
-
UP WITH THE TIMES. The core program for both elementary and secondary licensure candidates, include courses that address today's concerns in education: changes in schools and schooling, changes in the nature and nurture of students, and changes in society and the workplace. Early clinical experiences provide prospective teachers with experience with students in actual teaching educational settings, including work with ethnic, cultural and economic groups, adult learners, and exceptional children.
-
THE STANDARDS. Students will learn and understand the central concepts, tools, and structures of their discipline. Students will also understand how children learn and develop, and how children differ in their learning abilities. Teaching techniques and strategies of instruction are taught not only to educate children on subject matter, but also in an effort to encourage critical thinking and problem solving.
WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH A MAJOR IN EDUCATION :
The Education major is a pre-professional program, which means it educates students to become entry level teachers. However, many individuals pursue other teaching-related careers after they obtain their teaching license. Note that some of these careers require additional coursework, experience or degrees. Use the following as an idea list, and remember that they represent some, but certainly not all, of the careers pursued by individuals you obtain a teaching license.
Athletic Coach, Athletic Director, Curriculum Specialist, Day Care Administrator, Educational Materials Sales Representative, Elementary School Teacher, Guidance Counselor, Kindergarten Teacher, Librarian, Preschool Administrator, Secondary School Teacher, Speech Pathologist, Tutor
The following list represents a few of the kinds of businesses and institutions that employ individuals with an education background:
Camps, Churches, Colleges and Universities, Community Centers, Educational Publishers, Hospitals, Libraries, Non Profits, Public and Private Schools, State and Federal Government, Youth Services
