ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY AND PLANNING
Interdisciplinary Major or Minor - www.uwgb.edu/pea/epp
OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM:
Environmental Policy & Planning is an environmental studies program based in the social sciences. Not only does it prepare students for careers related to environmental concerns, but it also provides solid preparation for graduate work in environmental studies, public policy, public administration, law, urban and regional planning, and related fields.
There are two program emphases which majors can choose from. They are Public Policy and Planning.
The Public Policy emphasis focuses on environmental policy development and implementation, methods of policy analysis, and political, administrative, legal, and economic issues in environmental policy. The Planning emphasis focuses on planning theory and methods, geographic information systems, environmental impact analysis, land use, and economic issues in environmental policy and planning. Students interested in developing skills in the planning and development of land at the community and regional levels, and in the economic issues of environmental policy and planning, may want to select this emphasis.
TIPS FROM THE PROFS:
(from Dr. Kraft, Prof of Public & Environmental Affairs)
Dr. Kraft advises that students pay attention to the sequence of courses displayed on their departmental web page ( click here for more information-http://www.uwgb.edu/pea/). It is very important! Time is of the essence with this program. He has found that if students "eat-up" their early college years with General Education courses, they will find that they cannot complete the Environmental Policy & Planning degree within 4 years. He recommends seeing a Faculty Advisor as soon as possible!
A double major (or a minor) in political science or economics may be easy to accomplish with this program. It also highly compliments the environmental policy and planning curriculum and makes students stronger candidates when seeking careers or entry into graduate programs.
WHO SHOULD HAVE THIS MAJOR :
This major is designed for students who are SERIOUSLY interested in environmental concerns and studies (aspects of law, planning, policy, etc.). Those who are good with finding solutions to problems and enjoy economics should also consider this program. While it is a demanding program, there are many benefits! Some recommended minors are Environmental Science, Public Administration, Urban and Regional Studies, Political Science, or Economics.
WHO SHOULD HAVE THIS MINOR :
An interdisciplinary minor in Environmental Policy & Planning may represent a good choice for students who wish to major in Environmental Sciences, Public Administration, Political Science, Economics, Urban and Regional Studies, Social Change and Development, or a number of other programs.
WHAT’S UNIQUE ABOUT THIS MAJOR AT UWGB:
-
PREPARATION . Environmental Policy & Planning is a semi-professional program, meaning that it gives students preparation and specific training for careers after graduation. The program is career-oriented, rather than just giving the students pure knowledge about subject matter.
-
SUCCESS . Environmental Policy and Planning also gives the students the skills and abilities needed for career success immediately after graduation.
-
GROWTH . The number of students in this major has been steady. The popularity of the field continues to be important to our society.
-
EDUCATION . The mix of interdisciplinary and disciplinary focus gives students a diverse set of courses to complete, which provides a broader education and ultimately a better preparation for employment.
-
OPPORTUNITY . Internships, special topics courses, and/or applied research projects are available for every student. Internships are especially encouraged. These are generally short-term positions with local governments or agencies (usually non-paid) where students carry out projects related to their academic interests and skills. In addition to obtaining valuable experience, students enhance their opportunities for future employment and graduate school.
SKILLS & ABILITIES GAINED WITH THIS MAJOR :
A major in Environmental Policy & Planning develops knowledge and skills in the environmental sciences; planning and decision-making; social, economic and political processes; and the analytic capacities to participate in the processes which will shape environmental quality in the future.
WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THIS MAJOR :
A degree in Environmental Policy & Planning is designed to prepare students for a variety of challenging professions involving the planning, analysis, design, and administration of policies and programs dealing with the natural and human-made environment.
The Public Policy emphasis prepares students for employment in the public, nonprofit, and private market sectors as environmental policy analysts, economic analysts, specialists in public information, government relations, and related careers, as well as for graduate work in environmental studies, public policy, public affairs, administration, and law.
The Planning emphasis helps prepare students for careers and graduate work in environmental planning, urban and regional planning, geography, land-based consulting, mapping, and related fields.
