MANAGEMENT
Business Administration Emphasis
OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM:
As business operations in this country and throughout the world become more complex, the need for salaried managers is expected to increase rapidly because of the growing dependence of business organizations and government agencies on professional managers. Government regulations, senate hearings, new technology, and the development of diversified and multi-national corporations make professional preparation for careers in management highly desirable.
A professional manager is a salaried expert, trained by education and experience to manage any type of organization - be it a government agency, business, restaurant, hospital, hotel/motel, social, educational or service organization. General managers and top executives hold over three million jobs in the U.S.
Remember that Management is not a major entirely by itself. It is an area of emphasis within the Business Administration major. Make sure you read what’s on this page, as well as the information on Business Administration to learn more about the program!
TIPS FROM THE PROFS:
(from Dr. Michael Troyer, Assoc Prof of Management)
-
BE YOUR OWN BOSS. Remember that you (and only you!) are responsible for your education. So ask yourself- "What role am I taking in my education?" Ask for what you need, and demand what you need. No one else will help you if you don’t help yourself.
-
PROFESSORS ARE PEOPLE TOO. And they are eager to get to know you! Honest! Making an effort to get to know your instructor is SUCH A GOOD IDEA! (We here @ "MajorTopia!" simply could not agree more!)
-
THINK MASTERS DEGREE. If you choose the Management emphasis, and are looking to have a career beyond the entry level, then you might consider a Masters Degree. But don’t despair! There are many opportunities for you right out of college, but there are so many more (with better pay) with a Masters degree.
WHO SHOULD HAVE THIS EMPHASIS:
-
SOUND GOOD? Are you looking for a field where creativity is appreciated and applied to work, where there are opportunities to enter many related careers, and where there are opportunities for upward mobility and "climbing the ladder"? Then Management might be right for you!
-
TELL THE TRUTH. Have you ever described yourself as a "people-person"? If so, then this might be a great program for you! But what the heck does it mean? Well, being a people oriented person in the Management field means that you are willing to help others, are eager to deal with and help solve their problems, willing to assist in the education and training of others, and you want to work with a diverse group of people.
WHAT’S UNIQUE ABOUT THIS EMPHASIS AT UW-GREEN BAY:
-
IMPRESSIVE. The quality of Management professors is of highest importance to the department, and comes before everything else! This means that students within this major are given the best quality of service and education that can be offered.
-
MOST IMPRESSIVE. The faculty interacts closely with students, both inside and outside of the classroom. Upper-level classes frequently number fewer than 35 students, facilitating discussion and allowing close work with faculty.
-
APPLICATION. A distinctive feature of the program is that the majority of upper-level courses include a practical project component, offering the opportunity to apply the problem-solving theories and concepts learned in the classroom to real situations (practicums and internships). Alumni say these experiences increase their value to employers and set them apart from traditional business program graduates.
-
INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE. Extensive opportunities are available to meet business professionals and gain practical experience. An active Management student organization supports these efforts and helps students to meet others with like interests. Faculty members encourage participation in the internship program, through which students learn while working in real business settings.
SKILLS & ABILITIES GAINED WITH THIS EMPHASIS:
-
FREUD WOULD BE PROUD. In order to be successful in this field, you must have an understanding of people, and the psychology that drives them. This includes knowing how to motivate others, how to teach and train, and understanding different leadership styles and how different people respond to them.
-
TEAMWORK. A critical aspect of the Management field is being able to work with others within a team setting. Students in the Management emphasis will gain the experience and training necessary to become a valuable member of any team.
-
TOOLS YOU NEED FOR SUCCESS. The program provides considerable exposure to the liberal arts and develops the critical thinking, problem solving, interpersonal, communication, quantitative and computer skills needed by graduates to successfully serve as leaders within modern organizations.
