WELCOME BACK!
Diana Borrero Lowe, Coordinator

If you look outside, you can tell that fall has arrived and winter is on the way. The leaves are changing, the seasons are changing and there have been some changes in the American Intercultural Center (AIC) as well

If you look around the center, there is a new divider picture holder next to the windows with recent pictures of AIC students involved in activities. The new large erase board gives you a peek of upcoming activities so check it out every day. There are new blankets and pillows on the furniture and new art on the wall. Most importantly there are 59 new freshman students of color on campus this semester and 28 of them live in the residence halls. The hustle and bustle at the center can testify to the new numbers, the AIC is busier than ever with 50-60 students visiting the center every day.

You will notice one more difference at the center, Shia Yang is the new student assistant so read her article in this same issue of the newsletter to get to know her better or stop by her desk and introduce yourself, she is usually at the AIC from 5-7 p.m.

Some new activities are the New Student Orientation that took place in September and the Birthday Parties. There will be a Birthday Party to celebrate students’ birthdays every month so check out the list to see if you are on it this month and enjoy the delicious cake. The next birthday party is Thursday, October 24. Other activities are coming up so keep an eye on the calendar in the center.

Change is difficult so if you see students you do not know, please introduce yourself. Remember how it felt to be the new person. If you have any suggestions for new activities, decorations or anything else, please let one of the staff know or use the suggestion box on the program assistant’s desk. Welcome back and have a great, successful year!

John Lor with his winning artwork.AMSLC Winner at UWGB!
Sao Vue, Multicultural Adviser

HOORAY to John (Seng) Lor! John won 1st Place in the Visual Arts Category at the American Minority Student Leadership Conference (AMSLC) held at UW-Eau Claire this past April. As the 1st Place winner, John received a scholarship for $3,500.00 from Johnson Wax.

The title of the art piece is The Life of Hmong Women. The artwork beautifully illustrates the life cycle of a Hmong woman from birth to later adulthood in Laos. The drawing is very intricate in details, and viewers would have to slowly take their time to fully appreciate and notice the images in the drawing.

The AIC has a copy of John’s drawing and everyone is invited to see John’s drawing.
