American Multicultural Student Leadership Conference: “Still I Rise”
Diana Borrero-Lowe, AIC Coordinator
On October 24, 2003, twenty-five UW-Green Bay students will arrive in beautiful La Crosse, Wisconsin for three days at the American Multicultural Student Leadership Conference (AMSLC). The theme is “Still I Rise,” Leadership: An Ascent to Excellence. Great events, speakers, performances and development opportunities will be available to all students and staff attending.
Community service will be a key component of the conference this year with service learning as a major element. Scholarships are also a part of the conference and six UWGB students submitted their work to make them eligible for those scholarships. Last year, John Lor, won a $3500 scholarship for his submission of artwork. We have a copy of his work in the AIC. We do not know who receives the scholarships until we get to the conference.
This conference is sponsored by the UW system and private companies each year for multicultural students and a different campus hosts each year. If you did not get a chance to go this year, there will be another opportunity in 2004.
Reception Planned for Hmong Artist, May Chao Lor
Diana Borrero Lowe, Coordinator
A reception in the American Intercultural Center (plaza level of the Cofrin Library) at noon Tuesday, October 14 will celebrate the University’s purchase of 24 Hmong textiles (paj ntaub) for its permanent art collection.
The artist, May Cho Lor, Green Bay, will attend the reception as will as a representative from the Hmong community who will speak about the historical importance of the textiles within the Hmong culture. The textiles will be on display in the cases outside of the American Intercultural Center during the reception and for the remainder of the month of October.
Purchased with the aid of a grant from the UWGB Campus Diversity Grant Committee and funds from the Lawton Gallery, this acquisition celebrates Hmong culture and adds a significant body of work that has, up until now, been underrepresented. The reception is sponsored by Lawton Gallery and the American Intercultural Center. Information about the event is available from Stephen Perkins, Curator of the Lawton Gallery, at (920) 465-2916 or Diana Borrero-Lowe, Coordinator of the AIC, at (920) 465-2720.
Cultural Fair to be Held on October 15
Sao Vue, Adviser
This year, the 5th Annual Cultural Fair will be on October 15, 2003 in the Phoenix Rooms from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is an exciting event that is opened to the public. In past years, the Cultural Fair had been scheduled during the Spring semester but this year a change was made so the Cultural Fair will be part of Fall Festival.
As in previous years, the Cultural Fair will be packed with vendors and entertainers. New Flavor, a reggae band, will hold center stage from noon to 1:30 p.m. There will be entertainers before and after New Flavor. This year there is a new format, strolling musicians will be walking between the Phoenix Rooms and the Nicolet dining room.
The Cultural Fair is sponsored by:
the American Intercultural Center, Office of International Education, Phoenix Bookstore, Student Life, and the University Union. For more information, please contact Sheila Carter at 465-2200 ext. 43.
