In the Spotlight...
Hello, my name is Zena Banini. I am new to UWGB this year. I graduated from Shorewood High School in Shorewood, WI. While I attended Shorewood I was involved in the drama program. I was in Little Women, Showcases, Wizard of Oz, A Midsummer Nights Dream, Les Miz, etc. Doing this in high school sparked an interest in acting for me. I am majoring in Communications and Theatre. When I graduate I plan to have my own show (like Oprah) as well as act on TV and in films. UWGB’s excellent academics will help me to succeed in these areas.
New Office Assistants in the AIC
I’m John Lor, a junior majoring in graphic communications. I was born in Laos, moved to Thailand, then to Wausau when I was seven years old. My favorite pastime is photo editing and graphic design.
My name is Rocio Amaro and I’m a senior majoring in human biology. I was born in Matamoros, Tamaulipas Mexico, but raised in Texas for most of my life. I came to UWGB almost five years ago, leaving all of my friends back in Texas, but I don’t regret it because I have met other cool friends. Also, I have gone through many experiences (good and bad) that I would never have experienced back in my town. I want to thank all of my friends from OLA and the AIC for extending their arms to me and giving me the opportunity of knowing and accepting our own cultures.
I’m Melissa Skenandore, a sophomore majoring in Communication Processes. My outside interests include watching football and dancing.
Hispanic Students attend USHLI in Chicago
Jose Manuel Leon, SR, Bus Adm/Spanish
Organizacion Latino Americana (OLA) attended the 21st Annual United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) Conference in Chicago. The conference’s main objective is to train and motivate future Latino leaders. It is a three day conference. During this time the students attended forums, workshops and motivational speeches. Each year the conference focuses on a particular topic.
This year’s focus was community service. The workshops and forums embraced this nicely, allowing our students to understand the importance of being a volunteer.
OLA was well represented at the conference. An increase of students attending the conference from last year can be seen as positive. Eight members were present at USHLI, including Rocio Amaro, Elizabeth Moran, Patricia and Carolina Bacelis, Sarah Michiels, Mike Jessup, Cristian Rubio, and Jose Leon. Our members were able to meet successful Latino leaders, who at some point in their lives were marginalized and viewed as not capable. There were people like Congressman Gutierrez (D) IL, who gave a wonderful speech during the banquet. Congressman Gutierrez truly makes a difference in the way we see our future.
The United States Hispanic Leadership Institute Conference was successful, our students benefited greatly and the leadership content they received was extraordinary. OLA, along with its members, is committed to making a difference in the community. With conferences like USHLI we can be sure that UWGB will have better leaders.
