“Connecting Across Communities”
Sao Vue

Connecting Across Communities is the theme for the 9th Hmong National Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina on April 2-4, 2004. This year’s theme reflects the growth of the Hmong community, and the need to connect with individuals and organizations from outside the Hmong community to solve problems that not only impact the Hmong but everyone around us. The Hmong National Development Conference is an opportunity for individuals from around the country to come together to:

  1. Increase the professional capacity of professionals serving the Hmong,
  2. Promote community and civic activism of Hmong Americans,
  3. Promote and develop youth leadership and activism
  4. Promote the increase of scholarly works so it is beneficial to the Hmong community.

Over the past ten years, Hmong National Development Inc. (HND) has hosted the Hmong National Conference to bring together professionals, scholars, community members, youth, and leaders to increase capacity, promote active civic participation, discuss community challenges, and to celebrate the successes together. This year the Southeast Asian Student Union (SASU) will have 17 members attending this exciting conference. For many members, the HND conference would be their first leadership conference that they have attended. The students are energized about attending HND and are looking forward to bringing back ideas to UWGB and the communities.

Guess What? AMLSC is Back!

The 22nd Annual American Multicultural Student Leadership Conference will be held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on October 8-10, 2004. AMSLC is an exceptional opportunity to get together with students from across the University of Wisconsin System, for networking; sharing knowledge; and examining critical student issues while exploring themes in student life.

To provide leadership and academic development, and help students prepare for their role as tomorrow’s leaders, AMSLC 2004 will showcase student presentations; specially designed theme-driven workshops along two tracks—academic and career/professional; a graduate-professional school and career fair; and dynamic, nationally recognized inspirational speakers. Using the theme, “Voices of the Future Honoring the Past: Creating Change through Service, Scholarship and Social Action,” AMSLC hopes to give meaning and substance to the conference through social action and dialogue.

The conference is also an opportunity to submit your work and have a possibility of obtaining a scholarship. The categories for conference submissions are as follows:

Category I: Creative Writing (Poetry or Prose)
Category II: The Arts (Visual Art or Performance Art)
Category III: Research with Race/Ethnic Focus (Math/Science or Social Science/Humanities)
Category IV: Research, Open Topic (Math/Science or Social Science/Humanities)
Category V: Poster Presentation with Race/Ethnic Focus (Math/Science or Social Science)
Category VI: Poster Presentation, Open (Math/Science or Social Science/Humanities)

This year AMSLC is instituting a new award called the “Changemaker” Community Service Award. Students will be nominated at their individual campuses and will submit information about themselves according to the criteria. A selection committee will then select three students to bring forward for nomination to system.

Conference registrations are now available at the American Intercultural Center. The total cost of the conference is $30 but your cost is only $15, the AIC will pay the other half and also provide transportation. The conference sponsors provide your lodging and food. If you submit your work for review, the AIC will pay your entire registration fee of $30. Space is limited to 30 students so please register early. The campus registration deadline is April 30, 2004. Students who attended last year’s conference will tell you it was a lot of fun and they networked with students from other system universities.
