Students in the Spotlight: Juny Lee & Monica Thao

Juny Lee & Monica ThaoHi, I’m Juny Lee, a freshman Art Education major. I decided to attend UW-Green Bay because it was a comfortable place for me and close to home. I was born in Thailand and moved to the United States when I was two years old. I have lived in Green Bay for the past 17 years. Some of my hobbies include breeding bettas, biking, playing volleyball and break dancing. You can find me hanging out at the AIC.

Hello! I’m Monica Thao one of the new office assistants at the AIC. I was born in Oklahoma, but grew up in Appleton and Green Bay. Currently, I’m a senior majoring in Human Biology. I love singing, dancing, and volleyball. Juny and I (along with Jenny Vang and Jean Vang) performed a hip-hop dance at the UWGB Cultural Fair.

Stop in the AIC and say “hi” to the new office assistants .

Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month
Sao Vue, Adviser

Have you ever wondered how Asian/Pacific American Heritage month started? The month-long celebration didn’t happened until May 1990. Prior to 1990, the Asian/Pacific month was only celebrated for ten days in the month of May. In June 1977, Representatives Frank Horton of New York and Norman Y. Mineta of California introduced a House resolution that called upon the president to proclaim the first ten days of May as Asian/Pacific Heritage Week. A month after, Senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga introduced a similar bill in the Senate. It was not until October 5, 1978 that President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the annual celebration.

In May 1990, President George W. Bush designated that the month of May to be Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Throughout the month of May, many Asian/Pacific communities, organizations and departments will be celebrating and sharing their culture across America. Some of the events would feature important speakers, traditional food, films and performances.
