Spring 2003 page 1 2 3 4 Organization News On Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at 6:00 a.m., the following students from Intertribal Student Council piled into a car and van and headed to Harpo Studios in Chicago to attend a taping of The Oprah Winfrey Show: Heidi Schacht, Stacie Danforth, Pauline Centers, Lola Skenandore, Virginia Swamp, and Michelle Powless-Crouch. Also attending were Priscilla Moore, Diane Ebbers, and Misty Davids. We began our morning by going out for breakfast a block away from the studio. We then walked over to the studio and waited outside in the snow and cold for about 30 minutes before finally entering the huge, impressive building. After going through coat and security checks, we gathered into a small, cramped room with about 300 other people eagerly waiting to get seated. When we were finally able to get our seats, we were placed in the fourth row! Five of the nine of us were wearing bright red UWGB shirts in support of our school. The topic of the show was “sex slavery” in the African countries of Uganda and Sierra Leon. It was a very moving hour, which inspired us all to become more conscious of the horrific happenings that are taking place around the world. After the hour-long recording, Oprah asked us if we had traveled all the way from Green Bay. I replied that we had, to support her and to be inspired. She seemed impressed and we were all tickled. After the show we were given a tour of Harpo Studios by Misty David’s friend , April Terrien, a UWGB alumni who is a production assistant for the show. We got to see everything that goes into taping a show- it’s an incredible thing! We got back to Green Bay around 10:00 p.m., exhausted mentally and physically after a long day. As always- it was a good time. -Heidi Schacht Do you walk around campus bored and listless? Do you feel like you don't know a soul on campus and your life has no meaning Maybe you should check out Organizacion Latino Americana (OLA) and add a little spice into your life!! With all the changes going on around here you won't have time to be bored. OLA is still lining up a list of activities and events for this semester. I'm sure you all remember the Salsa Dance from last semester, well this Spring we are working hard to support fun and exciting events like the dance We'll be making and selling tamales in the month of April. We are also sponsoring a bake/art/yard sale in May. If you are interested in helping out your fellow man during these months we will also be volunteering and helping out members of the community. Lastly, if you’re looking for more enjoyment, the club members will often gather to just dance, talk, eat, and chill. It's a great way to make friends and learn more about Latino culture. So don't let good times pass you by, get involved. -Elizabeth
Moran If you are interested in joining the Black Student Union, our meetings are held every other Monday at 5:00 p.m. in the American Intercultural Center, CL 207. Our next meeting is April 7. -Prisculla Moore
