Can a Student Come Out to Play? The Team Leadership Challenge
Diana Borrero-Lowe, AIC Coordinator

The American Intercultural Center (AIC) student/staff challenge day will take place at the Team Leadership Center in Sturgeon Bay, WI on Saturday, April 24, 2004. This event is open to all students, please sign up at the front desk in the AIC. There is a $5.00 deposit that will be refunded to you on the day of the event.

The AIC will provide transportation and the vans will leave promptly at 7:45 A.M. from the library circle. Our day includes lunch and we will be finished at the course by 3 :00 P.M. In preparation for your visit please pay attention to the suggested items to bring with you: casual clothing, hiking boots or tennis shoes, jacket, sunglasses and camera to record your team adventure. The center is a rustic setting so we suggest that you dress in layers for outdoor activities. You will be participating in both indoor and outdoor activities so please go prepared for the weather.

By now you are asking, what is this all about? The Team Leadership Center offers a rustic, fresh, rural and experiential approach to team building. Accomplishing the initiatives at the Team Leadership Center isn’t about playing games or taking you back to childhood, it’s learning that you can accomplish things that you previously thought you couldn’t. It’s learning that problems are easier to solve when you use the resources around you and depend on the people you know.

The curriculum of the Center is filled with an immeasurable amount of initiatives and activities. Many of these opportunities are designed to meet all physical challenges. A day at the Center will include the chance to master the 250 foot zip line alone, scale the 15 foot initiative wall with your teammates or fall 5 feet into the safety of your teammates arms. All elements provide participants with an opportunity to:

  • Build self-confidence.
  • Develop team cohesion and problem solving abilities.
  • Take calculated risks with the support of teammates.
  • Grow both personally and professionally.

The day takes place at a turn of the century barn which houses a multi-use hayloft, a rock climbing gym, indoor high ropes challenge elements, lunch room, conference room, offices and restrooms. There is also a high ropes challenge course which features over 12 high rope challenges, including the 30’ pamper pole and 30’ outdoor climbing tower. There is a low ropes challenge course that features a series of team building initiatives and problem solving elements to unify team spirit and increase team problem solving skills. Invite a classmate or student roommate. We only have 22 spots open so sign up quickly. Come out and play with us!!

New Adviser Joins Staff at the American Intercultural Center

The start of Spring Semester brought a new face to the American Intercultural Center. Raeann Skenandore was hired as the full time Multicultural Advisor, replacing both Misty Davids and Edmund Black Thunder. Raeann is from the Oneida Reservation where she resides with 2 of her 5 children. Raeann also is a UWGB alum graduating in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree-majoring in Public and environmental Administration-minor in American Indian Studies. She also studied Community Economic Development at the Graduate School of Business at New Hampshire College for two years. For the past 3 years, Raeann served as Associate Director of Student Services and Operations for Cornell University’s American Indian Program in Ithaca, New York. “It’s good to be back home. Returning to UWGB is like coming full circle; this institution prepared me for some very positive career and community development opportunities. The AIC is familiar, yet very new. Multicultural students attending UWGB have greater support and programming initiatives to enjoy. I look forward to working with current students and encouraging new students of color to come to UWGB.”
