Student Organization News

The mission of the Southeast Asian Student Union (SASU) is to promote cultural diversity and awareness throughout the campus. We have over 50 active members in SASU.

Past events of our organization were the 10th Annual SASU Halloween Dance, a trip to the Hmong New Year celebration in Minnesota, as well as special events in which we shared our cultural traditions such as craft sales, and a Christmas gathering. We volunteered for the Salvation Army Toys for Tots and participated in the Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell Run/Walk.

Upcoming events for SASU:

  • Egg Roll Sale—Feb. 1-23. Order forms are available in the American Intercultural Center (AIC), CL 207.
  • Asian Week—TBA. Workshops on traditional Hmong clothing, food and customs.
  • Hmong National Development Conference (HND)—March 28-31, a leadership conference in which recognized Hmong speakers from the community speak about their successes in America and becoming a leader in the community.
  • SASU Potluck—TBA

Intertribal Student Council
is ready for spring semester and looking forward to all of the great and exciting opportunities we will be taking advantage of. A few examples of this are: A casino fundraiser in March, our Powwow on April 12 from noon-10:00 p.m. at the Phoenix Sports Center, and our trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico on April 23-27. We are very excited about all of these learning and growing opportunities; they’ll be good times! We also like to have fun and relax—we were able to get together in the beginning of February to lounge at the Ecumenical Center and eat lots of good lasagna. If you have any questions or comments regarding Intertribal Student Council, feel free to email Heidi at schahj17@uwgb.edu or Misty at davidsm@uwgb.edu.

The Black Student Union is currently planning the events for Black History Month. The Soul Food Celebration will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 7:00 p.m. For more details contact the AIC. We are also working on the Footsteps of African American History which is Wednesday, Feb. 19 from noon—4:30 p.m. in the Phoenix rooms. If anyone wants to help with any events, contact a member of BSU.

Some things I have learned…
Justin Willis, SR, History

May is on the horizon and my time as an undergraduate at UWGB will soon be over. I am very proud of my hard work, success and achievements as a student here, but what I am most proud of is how my awareness of the things around me has expanded. I would like to give a few examples…

  • I have learned that Asian and Latino individuals are not all from the same place.
  • I have learned how unfair Indians were treated by early settlers.
  • I have learned that reading is one of the keys to success in college.
  • I have learned to not have the least amount of insecurity or nervousness when surrounded by white people.
  • I have learned not to be too hard on myself if I didn’t do as well as expected because tomorrow is another day.
  • Most importantly I have learned to appreciate what I have.

What influenced my new found ideals was the American Intercultural Center. The AIC has definitely been my favorite place on campus because of what I like to call the 3 P’s….people, programs, and potlucks.
The AIC was crucial in my transition from Milwaukee to UWGB. The advisors have always been helpful and pleasant which made me, as well as many other students feel at ease. I will definitely miss the AIC when I am gone, maybe I will enroll again with a new major and start over…then again….maybe not.
