Historical Perspectives Series returns to campus

Jonathan Holloway, professor of History and African American Studies, and master of Calhoun College at Yale University, will speak to campus as part of the Historical Perspectives Lecture Series, at 12:45 p.m Monday, Oct. 26. At Yale, Holloway teaches courses on post-emancipation social, cultural, and intellectual history. His lecture is titled, “‘It Never Happened’: Race, Class and the Unbearable Burden of Memory.”

The Historical Perspectives Series lectures are free, open to the public and held in the University Union’s Christie Theatre. Read more here.

You can join in on the campus Common Theme discussion. This year’s topic is “Realizing Our Sustainable Future” with a common reading, Red Sky at Morning by James Gustave Speth. Check the Common Theme website for details.

New partnership takes UW-Green Bay into Northern Wisconsin

UW-Green Bay and UW-Superior are joining forces to meet their adult and distance learners living in Northern Wisconsin. It will make it move convenient for those living in the northern part of the state to earn a UW degree. The new initiative is called “The UW Where YOU Need It!” The degrees are available either completely online or by taking courses at various locations in Northern Wisconsin.

Quarterly Newsletter Maintains Connections for Adult Degree grads

UW-Green Bay’s Adult Degree Program features its programs, services, and activities of students and alumni in its “A.L.L (Adults Learning for Life) Newsletter.” It’s published exclusively online mid-month each season and is available to all alumni, students, faculty/staff, and friends of the University.

Emergency Texting New to Campus

With students glued to their cell phones, UW-Green Bay has added an emergency text messaging tool to its crisis communication toolbox. GB Alert can send out urgent news to the cell phones and email boxes of current students, faculty and staff members. Read more about the addition.

Video: Students give Wildife Sanctuary helping hands

More than 4,000 animals are taken in each year by the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary. UW-Green Bay students play a big part in their care. Students receive internship credit and hands-on experience that will further them in their careers while the sanctuary receives the extra help they need to take care of the animals.

Record freshmen, record students

UW-Green Bay hit a couple of all-time enrollment highs this fall with 1,041 first-year students and more than 6,300 students in all. The freshman class represents 13 states and 16 countries.

Language Lab looking for a few good toddlers

UW-Green Bay Prof. Jennifer Zapf is asking Green Bay-area alumni, University employees and returning adult students with young children to consider volunteering for a visit to the Language Learning Lab on campus. Zapf and her Human Development and psychology students are conducting a major study of toddlers’ skill and language development.

Participation is easy, with only a single 30- to 45-minute session in which the parent will gently guide his or her child through a few simple play exercises. Participants (the children, anyway) get a free book or toy as a parting gift. Zapf and/or one of her student research assistants will observe.

Pick-up the phone. It’s Alumni Phone-A-Thon time!

The 13th Annual UW-Green Bay Alumni Phone-A-Thon gets underway in mid-October as more than 20 student callers attempt to reach more than 26,000 alumni. Callers will be taking time to update your alumni profile (address, employer, etc.) as well as seeking contributions to UW-Green Bay in support of scholarships and academic programs.

This year we’ll be calling different majors each month. In October, we’ll be focusing on alumni who earned degrees in Growth & Development, Human Development, Psychology and the Master’s program in Community Human Services. Calling will take place on October 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22.

OK, not “the” real Elvis, of course, but you can see a “Let Me Be Frank Production” of an Elvis and Reba Christmas, the real Kenny G., a show called Haunted Illusions, recitals, choral and band concerts, live theater, and so much more, at the Weidner Center.

Coming up at the Lawton . . .

From Oct. 8 – Oct. 29, “The Art of the Fold: Accordian Publications,” will be on exhibit at the Lawton Gallery. It examines and surveys a broad range of printed matter that utilizes the accordian fold. All Lawton Gallery exhibits are free and open to the public.

Alumni artists create ‘ARTgarage’

They’ve been featured in our Inside magazine (click here) before — the story is worth repeating.

What use to be an empty cannery building is now a showcase and studio space for local artists thanks to a couple of UW-Green Bay art majors. The 4,000 square feet “ARTgarage” is located on Cedar Street in Green Bay. Read more.

The Phoenix men’s soccer team is having a kickin’ season, including one of the best starts in program history.

Phoenix men to host Badgers

Among the season highlights, the Phoenix men’s basketball team will host UW-Madison at the Resch Center on Wednesday, Dec. 9. Tip-off is at 7:05 p.m. Tickets go on sale Friday, Oct. 2 at 11 a.m. Call Ticketstar at (920) 494-3401.

Alumni and friends are welcome to a pre-game gathering at The Bar from 5-7 p.m. A cash bar and light hors d’oeuvres will be provided.

Also, the men’s basketball team plays its first-ever game at the Kress Center this year, hosting St. Norbert College at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7.

Laatsch Wine and Cheese Classic is back

One of the longest-standing traditions of the University is back yet again!

The Bill Laatsch Wine and Cheese Classic will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m on Thursday, Oct. 15 at the Shorewood Golf Course on the UW-Green Bay campus.

Alumni and friends are welcome. No RSVP required.
