On the road to the rest of your life, make sure you carry a survival kit.
Over 85% of the people who currently manage, market and raise funds for arts organizations started out as artists or performers themselves. That’s why a minor in arts management can be a practical option for those who are majoring in art, music, theatre or even humanistic studies – because chances are, you’ll need it.
We concentrate on learning about the administration of the arts in a not-for-profit setting, because this is the way that most of the artistic disciplines we study at the University level organize themselves. Coursework includes study in fund-raising, marketing, structure, management and programming with the unique needs of the arts world in mind.
Students who graduate with an arts management minor are qualified to seek employment in theatres, museums, galleries, orchestras, arts councils or performing arts centers. Graduates of the program are working in arts organizations around Wisconsin. Others are using arts management skills to promote their own performing or artwork, writing grants for their schools or acting as volunteer leaders for arts organizations in their communities.
Students in the arts management program are exposed to a broad spectrum of opinions and issues, regularly hear from guest speakers from arts organizations around Wisconsin, and have opportunities to attend statewide arts management conferences and events. A three-credit internship with a non-profit arts organization is also part of the experience.
UWGB is also the only school in Wisconsin that offers art majors the opportunity to pair arts management with gallery/museum studies, which prepares students for careers as curators in art museums and galleries.
At the minimum it takes two years to complete the arts management minor as the courses must be taken consecutively beginning with Arts in The Community in the fall semester. Seek advising early.
