UW System Placement Testing

As a rule, all incoming freshmen and some transfer students are required to take the Wisconsin Mathematics Placement test prior to registering at UW Green Bay, or within their first semester. Optional Placement Tests for Foreign Language are available in French, Spanish and German. UWGB students are strongly encouraged (but not required) to take the Foreign Language Placement Test if you have studied foreign language in middle or high school, and you plan to continue your study at the college-level. UWGB students do not take the English Placement Test because UWGB places students in their first English course based upon their ACT or SAT I scores.

Regional Placement Testing: This testing is offered in the spring on selected weekends. Our Admissions Office usually mails out Regional Placement Testing registration information in January to all admitted students. A flat fee of $20 for Regional Placement Testing is assessed to each first-year freshmen upon matriculation to UW Green Bay. This will appear on the student’s bill in the Fall.

For further information, go to http://www.testing.wisc.edu/ and click on "Regional Testing Program Online Registration System." Students can only register on this website from February through April.

Residual Placement Testing: Students not able to do the Regional Placement Testing in the spring will take Residual Placement Tests. If you are a current student and wish to test on one of the above dates, please confirm with Elaina Koltz, whose contact information is below.

ALL  UW-Green Bay students are required to take the Wisconsin Mathematics Placement Test (WMPT). The only exception is for students who transfer in a course equivalent to or higher than “Elementary Algebra” (Math 094).  If you have not taken this test yet, you should plan to do so on one of  the next available test dates listed below.  If you test on a day other than Saturday, you will need to stop at the Parking Office at the Main Entrance of campus for a parking pass.

  1. Submit a satisfactory ACT English score to the Office of the Registrar (SAT I English scores are an acceptable substitute for out-of-state students). The scores must be official.

  2. Transfer in an appropriate prerequisite, college-level course.

  1. Transfer students who do not have an acceptable ACT or SAT I score and who have not satisfactorily completed and transferred in a college-level course in English have the prerogative of enrolling in Fundamentals of Writing (Eng Comp 093).

  2. Satisfactory completion of the CLEP English Composition with Essay examination or of the CLEP Freshman College Composition with Essay examination will yield credit for Eng Comp 100 (College Writing), and will satisfy the prerequisite for Eng Comp 105 (Expository Writing).

  3. Students who wish to appeal their English course placement, as determined by the ACT or SAT I, should contact the Director of the Composition Program. His/her decision is final and will be communicated to the Registrar in writing.

International students with a TOEFL of less than 600 will take the English as a Second Language (ESL) placement exam upon their arrival; they will be placed in appropriate English courses based on their ESL exam score. International students from English speaking countries (e.g. England, Canada) need to complete the same requirements as out-of-state students.

Mathematics Course Placement Policy
  1. For purposes of determining appropriate mathematics course placement, the University uses the WMPT examination. Students who wish to enroll in any mathematics course, other than Math 094 (Elementary Algebra), must satisfy the course prerequisites by doing one of the following:

  1. Submit an official WMPT score to the Office of the Registrar.

  2. Transfer in an appropriate prerequisite, college-level course.

  1. Students classified as new freshmen, who do not complete the WMPT (with the exception of out-of-state students) will not be allowed to register for mathematics classes, or for courses with college level mathematics as a prerequisite, during their first semester.

  2. Students who have not taken the WMPT and have not satisfactorily completed and transferred in a college level course in mathematics have the prerogative of enrolling in Math 094 (Elementary Algebra).

  3. Out-of-state students classified as new freshmen may be placed in mathematics classes during their first semester if they have not taken the WMPT. In these instances, placement should be determined by an adviser based on their ACT/SAT I scores, grades, mathematics classes completed in high school and other relevant information. Out-of-state students must still complete the WMPT in their initial semester or a hold will be placed on their registration for the following semester.

  4. Students who wish to appeal their mathematics course placement, as determined by the WMPT, should contact the Chair of the Mathematics Program. His/her decision is final and will be communicated to the Registrar in writing.

  5. All international students will be subject to the same policy as out-of-state students as outlined above.

  6. This policy is effective July 1, 1997. Updated July 1, 2002.
