STUDENT PROJECT - FALL 2007 - ArcMap® software was used
to produce maps for a report on UWGB's carbon footprint

Courses in various aspects of geospatial technology have been offered at UWGB since the mid-1990s. In addition, it is becoming more common for instructors to include some exposure to geospatial technology in other coursework. Semester projects furnish an excellent opportunity for students to apply new technology to their area of interest.

GIS Classes Taught in the Department of Public and Environmental Affairs

Geographic Information Systems (PU EN AF 350/GEOG 350) is an introductory class taught every semester. Advanced Geographic Information Systems (PU EN AF 450/GEOG 450) is taught in spring. When there is sufficient interest, a customized version of the introductory class can be offered as was done in Spring '08 for the Professional Program in Nursing.

Remote Sensing and GIS (ENV SCI 454/654)

The RSGIS course, which is required for Environmental Science majors, is offered in the Spring semester. Although the course focuses on applications of satellite imagery in the natural sciences, it also includes basic instruction on the use of Geographic Information System software.

Classroom Applications

ArcMap® software and GPS mapping show up frequently in classes that require students to record field observations. Examples include Mammalogy (BIOLOGY 343) and Ecological and Environmental Methods and Analysis (ENV SCI 467).
