Farming Data - ISO Topic Category 01
The Data Resource Guide uses Topic Categories established by the International Standards Organization (Bulletion ISO 19115) to catalog the public domain data that we work with. According to the standard, Topic Category 01 is used for data that pertains to the "Rearing of animals and/or cultivation of plants". The following examples are listed in the standard; agriculture, irrigation, aquaculture, plantations, herding, pests and diseases affecting crops.
The Cropland Data Layer
The Cropland Data Layer is published by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).
It provides estimates of past planting activity based on LANDSAT imagery.
There are several volumes of CROPLAND data, some going back to 2001, in the
Biodiversity Center Spatial Data Library (volume prefix "01xCROPLAND"). All our holdings in
this category are available on the Geodata drive.
The Geospatial Data Gateway (GDG) is a source for many
agriculture related products including Cropland data through the 2010 growing season.
