Selected photos of Point Creek, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin

Nov 7, 2003 Gary Fewless

The following text and images provide a temporary reference to restoration efforts in the conifer plantation of Point Creek Natural Area, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin.

Among the first serious challenges to managment of the Point Creek Natural Area is the restoration of a conifer plantation. The conifers will be thinned, beginning in November 2003, followed by invasive species control and planting of desireable trees, with the goal of moving the vegetation toward a more natural community. The following is a description of the plantation prior to the first thinning, with photos taken in 2002 and 2003.

The main species of trees are Norway spruce (Picea abies), white spruce (Picea glauca) and red pine (Pinus resinosa), with lesser amounts of white pine (Pinus strobus) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana). The understory is nearly barren with a few red elder (Sambucus pubens) and intermediate woodfern (Dryopteris intermedia).
