Plant Divisions (Phyla)

In a common classification system for the plant kingdom, the following divisions (equivalent to phyla for animals) are described. Examples are listed for each division.

Division (Phylum) Examples
Bryophyta Mosses
Hepatophyta Liverworts
Anthocerophyta Hornworts
Lycophyta Lycopodiaceae (club mosses, "princess pine", "ground pine"), Selaginellaceae (spikemosses)
Psilophyta Psilotum (primarily extinct-only a few species remain)
Sphenophyta Equisetum (horsetails)
Filicinophyta Ferns
Cycadophyta Cycads
Ginkgophyta Ginkgo (only one living species)
Coniferophyta Conifers
Gnetophyta Mostly extinct; Welwitschia
Anthophyta Angiosperms (all flowering plants)
