Educational Experiences at Biology Field Stations
Clearing Houses
- The Organization
of Biological Field Stations web site has links to 180 field
stations in North America and Central America, including many that offer
summer educational and research opportunities.
- School
for Field Studies is a private "study abroad" program
offering college credit in association with Boston and other Universities
at field study centers in Australia, British Columbia, the British West
Indies, Costa Rica, Baja, Mexico and Kenya.
- Summer
Ecosystem Experience for Undergraduates (SEE-U) is based in
the Atlantic Forest, Brazil, the Biosphere 2 facility in Arizona, and
the Black Rock Forest in New York. During the five weeks of the SEE-U
program students will work through approximately 20 experiments and
explorations. In addition, each student will design and carry out an
independent research project, and participate in online discussions
and lectures.

Great Lakes Region
- The University
of Wisconsin System's Pigeon Lake Field Station is situated
in the southwest part of the 827,067 acre Chequamegon National Forest
near Ashland. This summer they will be offering courses in ornithology,
herpetology, and English, as well as 2 "art week" programs.
- Au
Sauble Institute of Environmental Studies is is a Christian
Environmental Studies Institute located southwest of the Straits of
Mackinac and offers courses in environmental chemistry, ecology, botany
and biology.
- Central
Michigan University Biological Station is a unique island field
station located in northern Lake Michigan on Beaver Island. The island
is about 13 miles long and 6.5 miles wide with an area of about 55 square
miles. The station offers courses in ecology, biology, statistics and
art.
- Lake Itasca
Forestry & Biological Station is located within Itasca State
Park on the shores of Lake Itasca, the source of the Mississippi River.
They offer a number of ecology courses including a class in arctic
field ecology.
- University
of Michigan Biological Station is located at Douglas Lake, at
the northern tip of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and offers a variety
of field courses relevant to the Great Lakes flora and Fauna.
- W. K. Kellogg
Biological Station is located in southwestern Michigan on the
shores of Gull Lake and offers outstanding opportunities to study courses
in local flora, fauna, ecology and evolutionary biology in a diversity
of natural and managed environments.
National
- Duke
University Marine Laboratory is set within the natural
beauty of the Outer Banks of coastal North Carolina. They offer some
summer courses in marine sciences.
- Flathead
Biological Station of the University of Montana is located
in Polson Montana and offers courses required for undergraduate degrees
in Biology and Wildlife.
- Hancock
Biological Station at Kentucky Lake in southwestern Kentucky
is run by Murray University. The station offers courses in aquatic biology,
ecology and scanning electron microscopy.
- Highlands Biological
Station is located near the Georgia and South Carolina state
lines, on a high plateau of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They offer a variety
of unique taxonomy and ecology courses that change yearly.
- Hopkins
Marine Station is located in Pacific Grove, on the Monterey
Peninsula, which forms the Southern shore of Monterey Bay and offers
a variety of courses in marine studies.
- Marine Biological
Laboratory at Woods Hole is one of the most famous private research
institutions in the world. They offer semester long eduicational experiences
and also offer The Marine
Models in Biological Research program, an eight week intensive
research experience for advanced undergraduates at the Marine Biological
Laboratory (MBL).
- The Mount Desert
Island Biological Laboratory is a research facility located
on an island 6 miles from Bar Harbor, Maine. This research facility
off ers a few courses for undergraduates, but also offers an REU
program in Marine Molecular Physiology.
- The
Mountain Lake Biological Station is located in the deciduous
hardwood forest of the Allegheny Mountains of southwestern Virginia.
It is operated by the Biology Department at the University of Virginia
and offers courses in botany, entomology, and ecology.
- Oregon State University
Hatfield Marine Science Center is a research and teaching facility
located in Newport, Oregon on the Yaquina Bay estuary, about one mile
from the open waters of the Pacific Ocean. They offer courses year-round
in the marine sciences.
- Reis Biological Station
is operated by the Biology Department of Saint Louis University and
focuses on the ecology and geology of the Ozarks.
- Rocky
Mountain Biological Laboratory is in the Elk Mountains of south-central
Colorado and offers in ecology, botany, and geology, as well as an REU
program.
International
- Bermuda Biological
Station for Research is a private research station that offers
courses in biology through liaisons with a variety of universities,
including Duke and UNC. Course offerings focus on the marine environment.
- Chapala
Ecology Station is located on Lake Chapala in central Mexico.
This station is run by Baylor and the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara.
Courses focus on tropical field ecolgy and conservation biology and
are taught in English.
- The
Bocas del Toro ("mouths of the bull") Biological Station is
located on Isla Colón off of the coast of Panama in an area known as
the Galapagos of the Carribean. The offer many different courses in
neotropical ecology and biology from ethnotbotonay to primate ecology.
- Kananaskis
Field Stations are located at the base of Mount Baldy in the
front range of the Rockies offers a variety of college courses through
several Canadian universities.
- La Suerte and
Ometepe Biological Field Stations, Biology and Art classes in
Costa Rica and Nicaragua
