Of Special Interest

Great Lakes Research and Education Center Mini Grant Program Since 2004 the GLREC has offered research internships for students and recent graduates during summer months to conduct studies in national parks of the Great Lakes region. The goals of the program are to: 1) support the education and career development of students and recent graduates via research opportunities, and 2) provide needed data and information pertaining to important issues and problems associated with resource management in parks. Deadline March 28, 2008.
Cofrin Student Research Grants Thanks to a generous endowment from the family of Dr. David Cofrin and the late John Cofrin, annual awards are available for student research on the Cofrin Arboretum and UW-Green Bay natural areas. Students carry out a field project in collaboration with a UW-Green Bay faculty member and present results in an Annual Research Symposium, held during mid-spring. Funding ranges from $500 - $1000 and can be used for a student stipend, field equipment, or research supplies. Students interested in applying should contact a faculty member in the area of interest and design a brief (2-5 page) proposal containing an introduction (with literature review), objective, proposed methods, and anticipated outcomes of the work. Proposals for the year 2008 must be submitted online: Deadline March 31, 2008.

Regional

Zoological Society of Milwaukee There will not be a request for proposals in 2008.
The state of Wisconsin has a proud legacy of conservationists such as John Muir and Aldo Leopold, and many of our universities offer excellent programs in conservation biology. In order to stimulate interest and excellence in the field of conservation biology, the Zoological Society created the Wildlife Conservation Grants for Graduate Student Research. The program offers financial incentives to graduate students throughout the state of Wisconsin who are conducting wildlife conservation research. Students are awarded up to $2,000 each on a competitive basis. In the last 13 years, the Society has funded 160 proposals ($254,000). Students conduct their studies globally, and their topics include a vast array of wildlife species and conservation problems. Student projects are selected based on their direct application to an urgent conservation problem, feasibility and academic merit. An advisory committee composed of academic specialists reviews proposals annually and makes recommendations for funding.

National

Environmental Research and Education Foundation Scholarships are awarded by EREF to recognize excellence in master's, doctoral or post-doctoral waste management research and education. Deadline April 30 annually.

EPA Grants and Fellowships Various opportunities in environmental sciences.

Hudson River Graduate Fellowship The Foundation will award up to four full-time research fellowships in 2008 to advanced graduate students conducting research on the Hudson River system. Fellowships awarded to doctoral students will include a stipend of up to $15,000 for one year, and an incidentals research budget of up to $1,000. Fellowships awarded to master's level students will include a stipend of up to $11,000 for one year, and an incidentals research budget of up to $1,000. The student's home university will be expected to be the primary source of support for materials and expenses required to do the thesis research, and will also be expected to cover any indirect costs associated with the project. In special cases, applicants can apply for a 15-month fellowship in order to extend the proposed project through an additional summer. The Foundation will not accept applications for extensions of existing fellowships. The award is conditional upon a full tuition waiver or reimbursement by the University. Applications, in electronic pdf format, for graduate fellowships must be received by 5:00 pm, Monday, March 3, 2008. Decisions will be made by May, 2008.

Jaguar Conservation Small Grants Program The Jaguar Conservation Program (JCP) was established by WCS to conserve and manage jaguars and their habitat throughout their current range. The Jaguar Conservation Small Grants Program was created to help acheive this mission. Awards are for one year and are renewable contingent on the first year's performance. Grants applications are due on January 1st and July 1st.

Smithsonian Environmental Research Institution Fellowships Research in various areas. The annual application deadline is January 15 of the proposed year of sponsorship.

Smithsonian Institution Fellowships Smithsonian Institution offers fellowships in fields that are actively pursued by the museums and research organizations of the Institution (see below). Welder Wildlife Foundation The Rob and Bessie Welder Wildlife Foundation's graduate research scholarship program was conceived and initiated by the Foundation's first directors, Dr. Clarence Cottam and Mr. Caleb Glazener in 1956. That year, the first graduate students began field research in wildlife and wildlife-related problems to promote the education of exceptionally qualified young people along these lines. Deadline October 1 for consideration for the following calendar year.

National

Brower Youth Awards The Brower Youth Awards is an annual national award recognizing six young people for their outstanding activism and achievements in the fields of environmental and environmental justice advocacy. The winners of the award receive a $3,000 cash prize, a trip to California for the award ceremony and wilderness camping trip, and ongoing access to resources and opportunities to further their work at Earth Island Institute. Young activist leaders ages 13-22 living in North America are eligible to apply. Deadline May 15, 2008.

Brown and Caldwell Environmental Scholarships Brown and Caldwell's scholarship support for students pursuing an education in environmental services is both a means of honoring industry pioneers and an investment in the future.

Entomological Society of America The Entomological Society of America and The Entomological Foundation, along with corporate or association sponsors, provide several annual awards and grants to recognize outstanding students and teachers of entomology.

Environmental Leadership Program Fellowship The Environmental Leadership Program's (ELP) Regional Fellowships and Regional Networks are innovative programs designed to build the capacity of promising emerging leaders in designated regions across the United States. By setting this regional model within a national framework, ELP invests in developing a vibrant community of environmental leaders within a given region, while at the same time joining members of the ELP community and the public in national conversation, debate and collaborative activities.

NIH The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research.

Sea Grant John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship The program matches highly qualified graduate students with "hosts" in the legislative and executive branch of government located in the Washington, D.C. area, for a one year paid fellowship. Deadline February 29, 2008.

Tibor T. Polgar Fellowship The Tibor T. Polgar Fellowship program is a research program conducted jointly by the Hudson River Foundation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. This program provides a summertime grant ($3,800 for each fellowship) and limited research funds for up to eight college students (both undergraduate and graduate) to conduct research on the Hudson River. The objectives of the program are to gather important information on all aspects of the River and to train students in conducting estuarine studies and public policy research. Polgar Fellowships may be awarded for studies anywhere within the tidal Hudson estuary from New York Harbor to the Federal Dam at Troy, New York, including the four marshes of the National Estuarine Research Reserve (Stockport Flats, the Tivoli Bays, Iona Island Marsh, and Piermont Marsh). Deadline March 3, 2008.
