• MOBILE GIS •It's not surprising that mapping applications are being developed for display on mobile devices.
The Wisconsin Geotools Project is a being developed by a team headquartered at UW-Madison. Lead researcher Francis Eanes furnished the following description:
"The Wisconsin Geotools Explorer app is an iPhone app that lets interested conservationists, outdoor enthusiasts, and amateur mapmakers of all stripes upload observations of the Green Bay bioregion -- in the form of photos, audios, videos, and short journals -- into a communal "wiki-map." The goal is to collect local ecological knowledge of the lower Fox River watershed and compile it into a publicly accessible interactive map that highlights the best & most challenging aspects of the Bay's ecosystem. Though the beta version of the app is currently being piloted in the region, the tool and map will ultimately be useful to environmental educators, ecotourists, local citizens, and natural resource managers interested in streamlining citizen science ecosystem monitoring efforts."
In late 2013 and early 2014, several UW - Green Bay students were recruited to assist with beta testing. Visit the Wisconsin Geotools website to read more about the project, download the iPhone app or use the Internet version of the app.
