Spring beauty is most abundant in upland deciduous forest. It flowers very early in spring and the plants quickly senesce and are all but undetectable by mid-summer. In this species the leaves are long and narrow and in Claytonia caroliniana, whose distribution is limited to the northern counties, the leaves tend to be broader, but there are sometimes intermediate individuals that are hard to place.
