The NAS Heirloom Plant Sale (all lists are up to date)

All plants $1.50 each. Boxes to carry plant 25 cents.

14 May 2011 at 9:00 at the LS Greenhouse

This year's sale is just around the corner. Click on the links below to find descriptions of the varieties for sale this year. We will have 60 varieties of tomatoes, 35 varieties of peppers, 3 varieties of eggplants, 1 tomatillo, 4 varieties of basil, borage, 3 cucumbers, a variety of lettuces, and 4 kinds of flowers.

The doors open at 9 am sharp, but we begin handing out numbers at 7 a.m. and people start lining up at 7--some people get there even earlier! We always have a good selection of tomatoes for even the latest arrivals,

peppersAll of our plants are heirloom varieties and of these we mostly carry unusual varieties you ar unlikely to find elsewhere. We do have some old favorites like Brandywine tomatoes, but we encourage you to try some of our locally developed varieties like Beaver Dam or WI Lakes peppers.

Our plants are high quality and are inexpensive. Compare to Totally Tomatoes, Burpee, and Seed Savers, who sell transplants in similar sized pots for $3.00 to $5.00each plus shipping.

Here are the tomatoes and peppers for this year!

Some information about Late Blight

Late blight has been a problem for gardeners throughout the eastern United States for the last few years. This disease fungus reproduces through spores that are transferred through infected plants. Windborne spores can travel large distances and are transferred to plants by rain. It occurs most often in wet cool summers. It is important to remember that there is no tomato variety (including hybrids) that has complete resistance or immunity to late blight. In fact the only hybrids specifically bred to resist late blight are Mountain Magic and Plum Regal. Just because a plant is a hybrid does not mean it is resistant to blight. Many heirloom varieties are resistant to late blight, but some varieties are more resistant than others. I have listed resistance levels that have been recorded by agricultural extension offices and gardeners for the varieties we are selling. Should you grow non-resistant types? Sure! Remember, even resistant plants can be infected. You must follow good gardening practices to limit the impact of late blight in your garden...And hope for a sunny warm summer where the humidity is low, and it rains just enough. :-)

  • Stake or cage plants to keep foliage sunlit and dry
  • Space plants widely so that they get good sunlight and air circulation
  • Mulch your plants with straw or plastic
  • water carefully from the bottom so that soil and water does get splashed onto leaves
  • Remove infected or otherwise damaged leaves immediately
  • Do not plant tomatoes or potatoes in the same location in the garden every year. Alternate with other vegetables.
