Heirloom Plant Sale Grants

The Heirloom Plant Sale arose out of need to provide funds for student research projects as well as to bring in speakers so that students could hear other perspectives on scientific research. The funds raised are used to provide an opportunity for students to meet and hear a diversity of perspectives and learn about latest research. All profits from the sale are used to directly benefit educational opportunities.

We provide grants in 3 different categories: student travel grants, student research grants, and speaker grants.

Undergraduate students with a major in Natural & Applied Sciences (NAS) and graduate students in Environmental Science & Policy with an NAS sponsor can apply for travel money to attend meetings and give presentations at conferences and workshops, or to for equipment or travel costs associated with student based research projects. Funds are also available to pay for travel and honorariums for speakers for NAS related seminars.

Faculty and students or student organizations associated with NAS are encouraged to speak with committee members about potential speakers or research funds.

The 2007/2008 NAS Heirloom committee members are:

Travel

Undergraduate students with a major in NAS and graduate students in ES&P with an NAS sponsor can apply for travel money to attend meetings and give presentations at conferences and workshops. While students do not need to present at meetings, preference will be given to those who actively participate by giving talks or posters. Only one conference per student will be funded, where the student is not presenting. Funding is available at the rate shown in the table below to cover hotel, travel costs and registration. Students must submit this application form, a paragraph describing the conference they are attending (and/or conference website URL) and the abstract of their poster or talk. Application forms must be signed by an NAS faculty member. Students are encouraged to apply anytime before the travel date, but applications will be accepted up to 30 days after travel is completed. Application forms are available below. Applications should be sent to Dr. Vicki Medland, Mary Ann Cofrin Hall, Suite 212. Or e-mail to medlandv@uwgb.edu

The number of grants funded will vary from year to year, but we expect to give out between five and 10 awards averaging $250. Most grants are expected to be funded for less than $250, a nd no grants will exceed $500. AApplication forms are available below. Applications should be sent to Dr. Vicki Medland, Mary Ann Cofrin Hall, Suite 212. Or e-mail to medlandv@uwgb.edu

Speaker Requests

Faculty, students and student organizations that have a relationship to NAS are eligible to request funds for speaker related costs. Although there is no set funding limit for travel costs associated with speaker we encourage those requesting funds to seek other sources of funding through UWGB if possible. HOnorariums will be $50 to $100 per speaker and will be determined by the committee. There is no official application form. If you are interested in requesting funds to bring in a speaker please speak with a committee member or send a paragraph discussing your request along with estimated costs, outside funding, and the speaker's CV or website.
