FIELD REPORTS

Autumn 2003

woodpeckers.

11-18-03
Andy Cassini Nick Walton
We made it to the Point at sunset, just in time to do Points # 1 and # 10. It was a very quiet evening, but we had a good mix of common species including Downy, Hairy and Red-bellied Woodpeckers, all of which were at Point # 10. There were low numbers of waterfowl, except for a large raft of over 1000 Common Goldeneye. The last birds of the day were Snow Buntings. We had sixteen species for the evening.

Cold and windy! Ice has started to accumulate on the edges of the bay. At Point # 6 (located at the tip of Point Sauble) we found a good mix of birds on the water including 20 Canada Geese, 2 American Black Ducks, 100 Scaup, 2 Redhead, and 12 Common Mergansers, plus 200 ducks we had to leave unidentified because of distance. Also at the point was a lone Dunlin; its behavior of standing near the ice/water interface caused us to take a closer look to ensure that it was not a Purple Sandpiper.

Today was a good day out at Pt. Sauble; we recorded a total of 39 species in just under two hours. The air was cool and the sky overcast, with a slight wind blowing off the lake. We did a count at Point # 10, a wooded location at the base of Pt. Sauble. American Goldfinch, White-breasted Nuthatches and a Downy Woodpecker were active at this site. A small group of Cedar Waxwings flew over. A Red-tailed Hawk with an engorged crop passed overhead. Further out on the point, a flock of Snow Buntings were active on the exposed mudflats, while a Bald Eagle passed overhead at a distance. Bufflehead, Common Mergansers, and Common Goldeneye were all seen out on the bay. Our day at the point ended with over 100 Tundra Swans flying directly overhead on their journey south.

It was an exciting day at Point Sauble. Point # 1 yielded large numbers of waterfowl, including Canada Geese, American Black Ducks, Mallards, Greater and Lesser Scaup (confirmed good visuals of both species) and Bufflehead. Perhaps the most exciting waterfowl of the day was a Long-tailed Duck. A flock of 60 Pectoral Sandpipers vocalized as they flew overhead. One Double-crested Cormorant was seen out on the bay. Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets, Snow Buntings, American Tree Sparrows and Swamp Sparrows were all seen at the point today. As an exciting finish to our afternoon, we were lucky enough to witness a juvenile Northern Shrike carrying a small mammal to a perch high overhead.

Today was overcast, but still warm. The highlight was a juvenile Northern Shrike seen from the bridge (Point # 4). Waterfowl seen today included 15 Canada Geese, 12 American Black Ducks, 100 Mallards, 10 Gadwall, 4 Redhead, and 10 Ruddy Duck. A total of 18 species were recorded for the day.

Today was a good day for ducks. We saw Northern Shovelers out on the bay. Traditionally, we found larger numbers of Shovelers in the inner lagoon. Sadly, the last vestige of a pond in this area is drying up. Much of the remaining portion of the lagoon has dried up and been choked out by the invasive species Phragmites. Other ducks on the bay included: Mallards, American Black Ducks, Gadwall and American Wigeon. Other highlight species seen at the point today were Purple Finch, Fox Sparrow, Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets and Dark-eyed Juncos. We also had a good look at a juvenile White-crowned Sparrow.

It was a warm morning at the point, with blue skies and little wind. A total of 22 species were recorded in under one hour. In the wooded area of Point # 10, White-breasted Nuthatches, Blue Jays, American Robins, Ruby-crowned Kinglets and a Downy Woodpecker were active. At this site, there was also a Red-eyed Vireo and a Northern Flicker. At Point # 1, Fox Sparrows, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Song Sparrows and White-throated Sparrows could all be seen near the beach. Out on the bay, Great Blue Herons, Common Terns, Herring Gulls, Ring-billed Gulls and Canada Geese were observed.

It was a nice day at the point with the temperature rising during the two hours spent there. Waterfowl were sparse with 26 Canada Geese, 1 American Black Duck, 24 Mallards, 20 Blue-winged Teal, 5 Green-winged Teal, and 1 Ruddy Duck. Good movement of passerines included 20 Hermit Thrushes, 30 Golden-crowned Kinglets and 3 Dark-eyed Juncos. There was a good mix of blackbirds for this time of year with 2 Red-winged Blackbirds, 3 Rusty Blackbirds, and 1 Brown-headed Cowbird. 42 species were tallied for the day.
