FIELD REPORTS

Summer 2000

american redstart

American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla)

Date
Observer(s)
Notes

Vegetation is filling in north shoreline and back bay on south shore. A few peeps, Killdeer, and Spotted Sandpipers were using the beaches. About 100 Mallards and Geese were using the point as a loafing area. Two Cooper's Hawks and two Red-tails were seen hunting along the point. No Blue-Winged Teal were seen in lagoon. It's possible that the low water conditions prevented them from nesting this year.

The lagoon is dry except for the very west pond. Bidens and Scirpus have filled in most of the open areas from the previous year in the lagoon. Unfortunately, Phragmites is also starting to move out into the lagoon. One brood of Wood Ducks were seen in the lagoon
NE winds brought the water levels up along shoreline. Lots of gulls using rock points as loafing areas. Carp seem to be done spawning as they weren't present in the lagoon or along the shores. Scirpus is in full bloom and the Phragmites is growing up along the edges of the lagoon. Cedar Waxwings were common throughout the point. Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers were heard calling in the oaks behind Point #1. Least Flycatchers were heard near point #5 and the Wood Thrush was still calling on the entrance trail.
Water is back up along shoreline and in lagoon. Carp are still spawning in lagoon and along the shoreline. A Brown Thrasher and Willow Flycatcher were heard calling near point #7. American Redstarts were quite common all the way around the point.
