These shapefiles were created in ArcGIS 9.1. Data after 1900 are represented as points. Since earlier records are less precise and tend to describe broader geographic areas, data prior to 1900 are represented as polygons in the described vicinity.

They were designed to be used with Wisconsin DNR hydrography layers (available at http://dnr.wi.gov/maps/gis/datahydro.html)

They are projected in WTM
Data points are located within a water body, whenever possible, rather than the marshy edges outside of the DNR-defined waterbody. This facilitates anaylsis by WBIC and watershed. Point locations within a lake are arbitrary.
They were designed to be used in scientific research:
- Data sources are cited and coded by types
- Estimate of precision is coded
- Metadata is included (view attributes)

Metadata: Attributes are the same for the two layers: Rice1900-2015 (points) and pre-1900Rice (polygons)
FID: Internal feature number. (Source: ESRI) Sequential unique whole numbers that are automatically generated.
Shape : Feature geometry. (Source: ESRI) Coordinates defining the features.
Chg_Date: If record coordinates have been changed since last version, date of change. Changes in other attributes are not dated.
Id: (not currently in use)
Species: Specific species name, if available, or common usage phrase "wild rice", as provided by original source document.
Date_ : Date in text format YYYYMMDD as provided by original source
Year_ : Year of record
Place: Location information as provided by original source
Precision_ : Precision of geographic location as coded in related table Prec.dbf; modeled after values used by the Wisconsin State Herbarium http://www.botany.wisc.edu/wisflora>
