Audio Identification Habitat Categories
Because expertise in bird vocalizations and calls may be limited to a specific type of habitat, audio identification is categorized by habitat: Northern Forests, Southern Forests, Open Uplands, and Wetlands. A birder can be certified for northern forests, for example, but not for wetlands or southern forests.

  1. Test Instructions: Please read before taking the tests, even the practice tests! The Test Instructions describe the format of the identification tests and will give you an idea what to expect and how to prepare.
  2. System Checks: Please read before taking any tests, even the practice tests! The System Checks will help determine if your computer and browser are set up properly to run the identification tests.
  3. PRACTICE TESTS: Please take the practice tests before taking the actual tests to double-check that your computer and browser can run the tests, and to familiarize yourself with the test format.

  4. TO THE REAL TESTS: If you have not already registered/logged in, you will be directed to the Registration page.
  5. Once you have achieved certification, you will receive a Certification Code. Your Certification Code can be provided to agencies, organizations and employers seeking Certified Birders. Please check the Client Posts page for current birding projects posted by agencies, organizations and employers. Note: when you move up a level of certification, you will receive a new Certification Code.
