Bird Audio Recording
Equipment
During summer 2008, recordings for the audio tests will be made with a Sony PCM-D50 digital recorder mounted on a tripod. An image of the field setup is shown below. This is a high quality recorder with built-in stereo microphones. Settings for optimal recording are straightforward and simple. Step-by-step instructions will be provided with the equipment.

Making Recordings
The method for acquiring test recordings involves the following steps:
- Select a place of high bird activity in one of 3 habitat types: forest, open uplands, or wetland.
- Visit the site on a calm day, preferably as close to dawn as possible. High bird activity generally begins about an hour before sunrise.
- Set up the recorder in a location where branches and other obstructions are minimal. With the windsock attached, point the microphones (120 degree position) in the direction of highest bird activity.
- Leave the site, and record for 20 minutes or longer. Be sure to press the Record button and the Pause button to begin recording.
- On the data form, record the date, time, GPS location (decimal degrees), and recorder settings.
- While at the site, record all birds seen and heard.
- After the recording has been completed, take one or more digitial pictures of the recording site. Be sure to identify the image numbers so that they can be linked with the recorder. (One strategy is to take a picture of the completed data form after the habitat images have been taken.)
Uploading Data Files
You will be sent a link to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay webshare facility, where you can upload completed audio files and habitat images. Directions will be provided with the email message.
